The wife and I used these to snow shoe in the San Juan National forest outside of Durango Colorado. We were both carrying a backpack of about 20 pounds.

What is your size?
I weigh about 185 without a pack, and am 5'10", and my wife weighed maybe 105 pounds on a good day without a pack.

How deep of snow can these go in?

We were hiking on about 3 or 4 feet of snow I found out, after taking them off thinking I didn't need them, and then almost immediately sinking one like up to my crotch. It turned out, we were actually snow shoeing over a creek when I did that, because I could look through the hole I made at the water rushing under the leg sized hole in the snow....

How heavy are they:
They are light enough to just strap to your pack when you don't THINK you need them...

Why buy these over cheaper brands?
They are made in the USA, and are guaranteed, and I have personally tried them!

In a word, these work. We were walking over creeks, up very steep snowy embankments, etc.

Get the flotation tails also!

If you want to see them in action, type "Mark Daniel Imaging" into youtube, and look for "Durango Colorado, and the Narrow Gauge rail on my channel.

They worked great for the first 2 miles of their first trip. Then one of the pivot pins came out and was lost under normal use. That left me with an unhappy trek through two feet of snow to get home. I've emailed Cascade (Owners of MSR) twice now telling them my story and asking for the damn pin, and have had no response. I guess I'll just have to keep using the bent nail for my $150 snowshoes to function. Shop around, spend a little more, and get a better shoe. Other than that they work fine with my mickey mouse fix. If I ever got the pin it would be 4 stars...

*EDIT* So customer service finally got back to me. They sent me some extra clevis pins and a water bottle for my troubles. I'm a happy camper now.

I really LIKE the EVO's. I bought mine at REI Inc wilderness outfitters. I am happy to support REI, but you can get a slightly better deal on the purchase here at Amazon.com

I selected the EVO's because the design is simple, and the straps that secure the snowshoes to your boots are very strong. I looked at other brands, but I was not happy with some of the straps - they look too fragile and likely to break after some usage. The EVO's are industrial strength. When buying out doors products, I look for very robust gear that can take a beating, is simple to use, and reasonable lightweight. That combination of factors will always convince me to throw a piece of outdoors gear into my backpack. And let's face it - the only gear that's worth having - is the gear you use!

I tested the EVO's on granular snow up at Big Bear in California. Snow depth was only about 8-12 inches. We've got more winter storms heading our way (YEAH!!!!), so I will get a chance to try them in deeper snow soon. I am a bigger person (220 pounds, and 250 pounds with a pack), so I chose to get the Tails with the EVO's. The Tails attach pretty easily to the rear end of the snowshoe and give you extra support. I highly recommend that you get the Tails - they don't cost much extra!

I was VERY happy with the EVO's. It's very easy to put these snowshoes down on the snow, step into them with your boots, and secure them to your feet. A couple of quick "buckle-on's" with the straps and you are READY to go! The showshoes are secure and don't move around. They did give very good traction. On the day I was at Bog Bear, there was a mixture of snow and ice. VERY slick if you only wear boots.

These work really well and the amazon price seems to be the standard price out there for these snowshoes. These work well for those that are just getting in to snowshoeing. They work well for my boyfriend who isn't used to walking with his feet far apart from one another. I will say they scruff/catch pretty easy at the front. You also really have to make sure your foot is in the correct position (ie ball of foot on the spot that designates that). I have no complaints but haven't used these in really deep, powdery snow. If you are not sure of the appropriate snowshoes to choose I suggesting looking at the MSR website.

Blizzard of 2016. Walked Saturday without snowshoes in about 20" of snow. Went as you might expect. Tough slog. Snow pushed inside of pant leg and over tops of boots. Very tiring. Sunday walked with MSR Evo's for the first time in about 28" of snow. Much better although needed the tails which I did not purchase. Minimal snow inside of pant leg. Straps stayed buckled throughout. Covered more ground than previous walk by far, although still not a walk in the park. No complaints.

Love these snowshoes. Last winter I used them weekly with all the snow in New England. Have also owned a pair of Tubbs for years. These are much lighter and the bindings are significantly easier to operate. Also purchased the Evo Tail extensions. Makes a great combination.
