What is your size?
I weigh about 185 without a pack, and am 5'10", and my wife weighed maybe 105 pounds on a good day without a pack.
How deep of snow can these go in?
We were hiking on about 3 or 4 feet of snow I found out, after taking them off thinking I didn't need them, and then almost immediately sinking one like up to my crotch. It turned out, we were actually snow shoeing over a creek when I did that, because I could look through the hole I made at the water rushing under the leg sized hole in the snow....
How heavy are they:
They are light enough to just strap to your pack when you don't THINK you need them...
Why buy these over cheaper brands?
They are made in the USA, and are guaranteed, and I have personally tried them!
In a word, these work. We were walking over creeks, up very steep snowy embankments, etc.
Get the flotation tails also!
If you want to see them in action, type "Mark Daniel Imaging" into youtube, and look for "Durango Colorado, and the Narrow Gauge rail on my channel.
*EDIT* So customer service finally got back to me. They sent me some extra clevis pins and a water bottle for my troubles. I'm a happy camper now.
I selected the EVO's because the design is simple, and the straps that secure the snowshoes to your boots are very strong. I looked at other brands, but I was not happy with some of the straps - they look too fragile and likely to break after some usage. The EVO's are industrial strength. When buying out doors products, I look for very robust gear that can take a beating, is simple to use, and reasonable lightweight. That combination of factors will always convince me to throw a piece of outdoors gear into my backpack. And let's face it - the only gear that's worth having - is the gear you use!
I tested the EVO's on granular snow up at Big Bear in California. Snow depth was only about 8-12 inches. We've got more winter storms heading our way (YEAH!!!!), so I will get a chance to try them in deeper snow soon. I am a bigger person (220 pounds, and 250 pounds with a pack), so I chose to get the Tails with the EVO's. The Tails attach pretty easily to the rear end of the snowshoe and give you extra support. I highly recommend that you get the Tails - they don't cost much extra!
I was VERY happy with the EVO's. It's very easy to put these snowshoes down on the snow, step into them with your boots, and secure them to your feet. A couple of quick "buckle-on's" with the straps and you are READY to go! The showshoes are secure and don't move around. They did give very good traction. On the day I was at Bog Bear, there was a mixture of snow and ice. VERY slick if you only wear boots.Read more ›
