An outfitter caters to the general public, and looks for rugged, reliable gear that can SAFELY be used by all kinds of people - most of whom will be quite inexperienced. The MSR concept fails utterly and is actually quite dangerous, particularly when issued to youth groups like Boy Scouts.
Sure, the MSR can be an OK stove in the hands of an adult who takes the time to become expert in its operation. But kids will not likely be able to safely handle this stove without direct and constant supervision. And even then ..... we’ll, let’s just admit that the quality of adult leadership runs the gamut from excellent to terrible.
I have worked with Scouts for over 40 years, and during the past ten years have seen many close calls with the MSR stoves. Including:
* plastic pump failing, literally popping to pieces during pumping (supposedly fixed by design changes, but it’s still plastic and not to be trusted)
* kids and adults getting the detached tank cross threaded when attaching to the pump, leading to dangerous fuel leaks
* the flexible hose allowing the tank to be situated WAY too close to the flame - I have personally saved a group of five scouts from what would have been a fire grenade. Just happened along and saw it in time
* use of large pots which direct too much heat towards the firebomb - oops, I mean fuel tank (do some internet research, there have been serious injuries from explosion in at least one case)
* difficulty putting the stove together properly - and let’s face it, you often have to assemble it in the dark with cold, wet fingers. This results in the rigid retaining wire not being in place, with the possibility that the hose might pop out under pressure. In that case, the tank would spray fuel towards the burner, unless there is a built in cut off valve (which I doubt).
What do I recommend? I was a professional outfitter at one of the largest canoe bases in the world, outfitting trips into the BWCA and Quetico. I had 150 + Coleman Peak 1’s that went out 40 - 60 days every summer and got used in the winter at sub-zero temperatures. With very few problems. Safe, reliable, powerful, durable. I still use one that was made in 1976 and it works fine. Yes, it’s a little heavy for backpacking, but it is an Outfitter grade stove. Food for thought.....
Straight out of the box it boiled 3 cups of water in 4 minutes. This is a proven stove with no competitor on the market in its class. Price at $44.97 (prime exclusive), weight at less than 1 lb, efficiency is incredible, durability is out of this world.
If you are looking for a reliable, lightweight backpacking stove, this is an awesome decision, even at a potentially higher price of $89-$99 range. Plus, with minor maintenance, it will provide you with solid performance 30 years down the trail. Thank you MSR for making such a wonderful product. A lot changes over 30 years. I'm so happy that this product has stayed true to service and reliability.
UPDATE: I've seen a lot of reviews that criticize the "simmer" capabilities of the whisperlite stoves, both the standard and international models. I will say the control knob on the older model pumps allowed for more intuitive flame control, it just felt better rolling the knob as opposed to twisting the valve. Nuance, I know, but in the conversation... I have been able to fry an egg over easy with no problems. It does require a deft hand and watchful eye, but is certainly possible with little fidgeting other than managing the flame at its lowest burn point. I would not discourage anyone from purchasing this stove due to the simmer capabilities. It will simmer and cook on low flame as long as you watch it and monitor the amount of food in the pan/ pot. Stay vigilant.
So I am open to suggestions and reasons why I should like this new MSR Whisperlight over my 442.
Now if you don't have a stove and you already have a MSR fuel bottle this might be a good deal. But starting from scratch wanting a reliable and lightweight stove I would recommend the Coleman Sportster dual fuel single burner for $65 at Walmart. (it replaced my 442 years ago).
The Whisperlight might be a backup stove if I don't sell it at my loss.

Just like anything, it requires practice before going in the field. Practise priming and lighting so you dont waste your fuel!
