Product Description
A maverick Irish cop takes on the London crime world
Detective Tommy Murphy has nothing left to lose. Guilt-ridden over the death of his young daughter, who was slain by the IRA, he flees to London to work undercover for the Metropolitan Police. Hardheaded, hard-drinking, brash, and brooding, Murphy is down on his luck. But he still has more than a bit of the old Irish charm, flashing quick wit and a roguish grin.
James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, Match Point) is "absolutely brilliant" (The Mirror, U.K.) in a role created especially for him by novelist Colin Bateman (Divorcing Jack). Murphy delves into London’s criminal underside--drugs, blackmail, murder--assisted by DI Annie Guthrie (Claudia Harrison, The Cat’s Meow), his sexy, savvy boss.
As seen on BBC America.
BONUS: biography of James Nesbitt.

Undercover cop Tommy Murphy (James Nesbitt, Cold Feet,Jekyll) throws himself into dangerous assignments to escape his painful past. He infiltrates a trigger-happy gang of diamond thieves, gets sent to prison to lure information out of a serial kidnapper, and risks becoming the victim of a murderous female who uses a gym to find her victims. Other assignments--such as acting as the bodyguard for a threatened snooker player--seem less dangerous, but minor problems (a snooker player's surly manners, for example) swiftly escalate to threaten the lives of Murphy and his superior, DI Annie Guthrie (the excellent Claudia Harrison). Murphy's Law: Series One has a lighter tone than the show would develop in later series, but the balance of procedural thrills and humor is thoroughly enjoyable. Nesbitt's expressive eyebrows get a good workout; cheekiness comes naturally to him, but he's just as good at revealing Murphy's other sides, such as when his ex-wife appears and forces Murphy to face buried secrets. Most episodes feature cunningly surprising plots--in particular "Kiss and Tell," in which Murphy pursues a female serial killer while a vengeful Russian mobster is pursuing him. Series One is the only series featuring Harrison, who dropped out at the beginning of the second. It's too bad, because the chemistry between Nesbitt and Harrison is a pleasure to watch. Murphy's Law is given added ballast by guest stars like Ray Stevenson (Rome), Lynda Steadman (Career Girls), Adrian Dunbar (Hear My Song), and David Bradley (the Harry Potter series). --Bret Fetzer

Again, Nesbitt is a rogue but this time he is Detective Tommy Murphy. Murphy has a tragic secret in his past that has left him emotionally broken. His police superiors need him to solve a series of diamond heists and he gets one more chance.
I enjoyed the quirkiness of Murphy's character. He's dedicated to solving crimes and yet he not stretching the limits of the law himself. He can be patient but never call him Paddy or risk a dose of his anger. Of course, someone is always calling him Paddy, which made me wonder what it would be like for a Northern Irish detective to be working in London.
Murphy is often partnered with Detective Inspector Annie Guthrie--the stunningly beautiful Claudia Harrison. There is obviously a strong attraction between the two and Murphy takes every chance to make that attraction known. They make a great team and that is part of the fun of the show.
The series raised my curiousity a number of times. Murphy normally goes undercover in every episode. He usually keeps the name "Murphy." His picture has even been in the paper but yet he easily gains the trust of the criminals. I wondered if he keeps his police salary AND the salary he earns when he is working undercover for the mob. Also, Murphy likes the bottle and is often drunk and can cause a scene. That's certainly not good for a detective who is often undercover.
There is some variety and creativity in the crimes and in the episodes. In KISS AND TELL, Murphy goes undercover and joins an elite fitness club for members looking for extramarital fun. In the last episode of Series 1 called REUNION, Murphy goes undercover again to work for an owner of a SoHo Burlesque club in a street war with a rival. Is murder along with some fun show scenes of beautiful dancers that adds an extra touch.
It was fun to watch the series. There was a couple of times I had to go back and try to understand one line here at there. Murphy sometimes falls strongly into his northern Irish accent but it all adds to the charm of the show.
James Nesbitt completely inhabits the grief-wrought Murphy, a man pushed to the edge in ways few experience. With conviction and wild despair, he becomes a means for justice. Reminds me of Hammett's staccato poetry. I've known fascinating aged ex-criminals, salt of the earth, friends with great stories, as well as law enforcement folks; this show actually understands the dynamics involved. This is one hard intelligent romp, from Murphy's Law: Series One to Murphy's Law: Series Three . For connoisseurs of crime/suspense drama, Season Three is over the top great; snappy and tight, with crisp writing and great momentum. At this point, James Nesbitt stepped in to contribute creative direction, propelling the show to another level. Season Two is not as good, but Season Three is an intense fantastic run, due to Nesbitt's superb story ideas and acting. Throughout, James Nesbitt inhabits the role of Murphy perfectly, stretched tight across a harsh life. Nesbitt is also superb in the revival of Jekyll . Sadly, after the first season of "Murphy's Law," the Irish priest friend, a great character and gentle ballast, is dropped; Series 5 is lackluster at best.
I'm now awaiting the Region (1) release of the dynamic BBCTV series COLD FEET-Season 4. Series 1-3 are out and I have them! All you have to do is search for COLD FEET and you can watch the pilot. You will crack up and want to buy all you can get. The line up is chock full of talent, but James is the star by far! He's beautifully Irish but thank God the BBC loves him too.
He is an unlikable character (this is probably intentional). The general plot of these first two episodes were easy to follow; the details of the cases were quite a bit more difficult. I know that there was some humor, and I think I laughed once.
I seem to recall that the character Murphy loves to say "Jesus" and "Christ" a great deal. For me, that is annoying.
I made the mistake of ordering the whole series. I am not sure at this time if I will complete watching it or not.

James Nesbitt plays undercover cop Tommy Murphy, a man whose life has been shattered by the murder of his daughter, split up from his wife he returns to work but in London instead of his previous post in Ireland and soon begins to ruffle feathers. Unconventional, uncompromising and only too happy to rattle a few cages to get things done.
At the outset the character of Murphy is solemn but as the 1st series progresses he becomes very funny and Nesbitt carries off the show with a disarming display of wit and charm. He is doubtless aided by sharp scriptwriting and some well paced and enjoyable plots.
At the outset of series 2 things take a serious turn and it takes some time for the humour to return but as always the plots remain tightly controlled and the format of 50 minutes instead of 90 works well.
Series 3 is a different beast altogether with the humour gone and although retaining the 50 minute running time for each show the story runs through the whole series and once again the series finds itself re-invented and refreshingly different from those before it. The plot is darker and Murphy is that much older and the risks he takes and those he has seen die have taken a toll, he is a solemn and more dangerous character in this 3rd series.
This is a great show, well paced, excellently written characters and plots and some great acting, particularly from Nesbitt who as the focus of the show keeps his character believable and interesting.
Picture is okay but can be quite rough at times and the sound is fine if nothing spectacular.
A great boxset that is well worth your time. recommended.
