Stunning performance with this budget mic

These mics are great on acoustic guitar and vocals, especially female. I found them a little too zingy for drum overheads but fabulous on close miced snare drum or tom. Take care to keep them pointed away from cymbals as much as possible though as they will pick up too much top end if you're not careful.

this is a good mic for the money

Hi everyone, 39 year veteran recording engineer here with a quick review of the MXL-603 microphone. The other reviewer is right when he says the high frequency behavior of this microphone can be aggressive and unpleasant. This characteristic is shared by most of the low priced entry level microphones. Even so, this is a good mic for the money. However, if you're willing to spend the time or money to modify it then you can own a very good microphone for a very reasonable cost.

Sadly, the David Royer tube modification for this mic is no longer available. However, there is plenty of detailed information on line with instructions on modifying the electronics and the capsule housing. If you're handy with tools and a soldering iron then the modifications are an easy DIY project. If tools and soldering sound like a recipe for disaster then I think Michael Joly still modifies these mics for a reasonable price. Either way, the 603 can be dramatically improved if you're so inclined.

One little caveat... if you do the work yourself be careful when you remove the three screws at the XLR connector end of the body. The screw holes can strip very easily.

So, you can have a decent low priced mic or a much better modified mic. Both are good deals. Happy music making!
