Do not get this book if you are trying to run lion server. If you want the basics of what Lion Server entails... then perhaps you should get a used version or just borrow the book. By the time this book came out... the info seemed to be outdated! They basically have you follow the steps assuming no errors and if you have an error... your on your own!

It seems that they have the steps for configuration but following this book doesn't get you very far. Lion server is suppose to be able to handle serving more than one website but this book tells you to just forget about it if you are not an Apache2 expert!

This book also seems to be put out just to be put out whether on time for Lion or just to have something to sell. For some subjects, the author even takes liberty to tell you that there isn't enough room in the book to explain or teach you complicated steps and what not... then why put this book out with so few pages? Ok.. so it's suppose to be portable... then I suggest getting to the point instead adding unnecessary jargon so that you would have room to explain.

All in all... as I've mentioned.. it gives you the basics of what the server has and does.. but following articles and videos on the web helped much more than this book did

I'm grateful to this book for getting me started with networking when I set up a small school network - unlike the software which didn't work so well at first.

The book is easy to read and does a great job of explaining networks, shares and a ton of stuff we'd never heard of to someone trying to set up a server for the first time. It showed how to fix a lot of issues and find more answers online.

Lion Server seems mostly fixed now, so some of the book is out of date. But I'd recommend it if there's an update.

I bought this book because I needed to set up a server for my dad's office. I was already using Snow Leopard Server at home for my own setup, but unfortunately could only get Lion Server for my father. For some reason, it is very difficult to set up a VLAN for VPN on Lion Server, and not the breeze that it is with Snow Leopard. I bought this book because it claimed to have instructions on how to set up the VLAN with Lion. I followed their instructions to the T and the VPN service did not work. Sure I could connect, but I could not access anything on the main network. When I dropped in my Snow Leopard server in place, it worked perfectly. It was not a routing issue on the network itself, but a routing issue with Lion that this book had no instructions on how to resolve.

The instructions they provide in the book are straight from This website: [...] and do not provide a working VLAN w/ network access to the rest of a network.
