The General had similarities to Patton, but Patton is my favorite, all business with a flare and deep concern for his fighting men like MacArthur. It would be good to see George Washington contrasted against these two great Generals, as I believe our Greatest General was George Washington, his love for God and country was inspiring to all. All three Generals believed in God, in Country, and what they were doing was just and right, and in some cases went beyond their call to duty --they listen to the President or pretended with a wink or at times ignored as if they did not hear or understand, or did exactly what they believed had to be done at the time to win the war. When you watch these movies you definitely see how politics enters into all the decisions, and maybe the jealousy of others or the Generals to want to lead and be recognized for their great or their expected achievements. I also enjoyed watching the German General Rommel. and the British General Montgomery. War is ugly, but it is also important to understand the causes, the politics, the strategies, and the motivations of the leaders running the wars.

I think Gregory Peck, did an outstanding portrayal as MacArthur, An American military, five star general, who some thought of as a dangerous demagogue. But I happen to think, was the right leader, at the right time and place. Whether the 33rd president was right to order the recall of MacArthur to the States, is water under the bridge now. The movie is well worth the watching for the historical military buff. And I think Ed Flanders as Harry Truman, did a spot on characterization

The New Movies They're Making These Days Are Mostly Trash That Don't Reflect My Values. Another Thing: Production Values, The Way Lighting Is Used, Microphone Placement...Sound Staging, All Seem To Be Lost Arts. I Notice The Newer Movies Seem To Rely Upon Darkened Backgrounds To Mask Poor Site Preparation, And The Dialogue Is Hard To Hear; It's As If Modern Producers Have Done Away With Sound Engineers, That Formerly Assured That Onscreen Dialogue Was Clearly Heard. I'm Not Talking About Sound Volume; This Problem Cannot Be Solved By Turning Up The Volume; It's More A Matter Of An Understanding Of Microphone Placement...Old Fashioned Production Values.

There is no question that MacArthur was brilliant in many ways, both positive and negative but the real grit was missing from this movie. Some of his military decisions were amazing but the holes in how he dealt with the Korean situation were dark and deep that only his personality quirks could explain. Truman, as President, was also the right man in the right place at the right time. However, the personalities couldn't have been more poorly matched.
