Top customer reviews
I have the unit transferring data over the firewire cable and being powered over the USB cable. Note that the USB "power cable" actually has a different "power adapter" style connector on one end for connecting it to the unit, and your standard USB plug on the other end. I don't know if other units are like this, but thought it worth mentioning.
There are a couple of quirks with this units. First of all, the small screws that hold the enclosure together strip VERY easily. Use a philips screw driver with a sharp, pointed tip (not a rounded or blunt one) and be sure to apply lots of pressure when first starting to remove the screws. The second problem I have with this unit is the LED light on the front. I'm not kidding when I say that if the lights in your computer room go out, you can use this thing as a flashlight (think Mag-Lite intensity). Do NOT look directly into this light, as it will hurt your eyes. The light was so bright that I actually got a piece of masking tape to put over it to dull it down a bit.
Overall, it's a really great unit except for these two problems. I don't have a problem recommending it to anyone.
Installation of the drive is a snap and both usb and firewire connectivity works perfectly.
If I were to have any gripes about it...they are that you have to use one of the 2 usb ports for data and one for power.....strange....but it is easier then carrying a power adapter of sorts in your bag.
Just a REMINDER: This is the PATA model of the enclosure...if you need SATA there is a different model. For Example: Macally G-S350SUA Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB2.0 Storage Enclosure for 3.5-Inch SATA HDD OR Macally PHR-250CC Hi-Speed FireWire/USB2.0 External Storage Enclosure for 2.5" SATA HDD
Hope my review helps you in making the right decision.
The blue/red/purple activity light was indeed way too bright, maybe they could work on that. Built quality was excellent, everything fit nicely. CD with drivers and manual wasn't needed.
The case is so small that only 9.5mm high drives will fit. Most are that size, but some very high capacity ones are taller and won't fit. Anyone needing a nice small enclosure for a standard 2.5" PATA drive ought to be happy with this.
Does heat up a bit when in heavy use. Cables could be longer, but if you're using it with a laptop/on-the-go, it's probably not a problem.
The LED light on the front is very bright--nice, if you need to be able to see it, annoying, if you're trying to go to sleep and it's in the same room. However, it does come with a little black leather case which will cover the LED if you need it not to shine in your eyes.
Solid built and design, cables supplied work well with Mac but not so well for PC. The cable supplied has to heads (USB's) one of them don't work at all with PC but the second one does. Mac no problems. Over All thi product works for me and is still working after 12 months.
It's very easy to attach your drive to sled, then just slide the sled into the housing and attach the ends and your done.
My only complaint is an extremely minor one, the blue power on light is a little bright. But a piece of tape, of something placed in front of it does the trick
I love that they are made of aluminum that acts as a heat sink so the components don't get too hot.
Macally has a winning design with these cases.
I suppose that if I had one issue it is will the really bright LED's when it is running. They can make a dark room "flash" and can actually hurt my eyes. I have tape over all of them to cut down the light and stop the strobe light effect in my office.
