This book is NOT " A Complete Owner's Manual". It is an extremely vague guide that would work well for a sixth grader doing a report on macaws, but that I found to be of zero help in understanding my military macaw's needs and behaviors. It answered none of my questions and if someone bought this book and a macaw they would be flying blind.

I did learn that military macaws suck as pets though, so, there's that.

This is a great reference for general needs information. A good place to start with a new Macaw. VERY helpful, especially during those first few days, you will get help to avoid common pitfalls and mistakes and make your experience more positive from the very start.

I was really excited to receive this book. After I read it through, I decided to return it for a refund.

The only good thing about this book is that it has some basic information but is nowhere near getting you ready to own a Macaw nor even handle one.

As I was reading through, it felt like I was reading some sort of generic paper that you can find online. I am not sure if the author is a really good trainer of Macaw and birds and if he personally has any, but if he does, he surely does not seem to convey it in this book.

It felt that this book is ghost written (not by the author) and somebody just looked up a bunch of info on the web and slapped it in a book. There are no insights and very few practical tips.

The main reason I give it a 1 star is because the book actually recommends clipping of the wings. Let me ask the author who made this recommendation, how do you feel if someone recommended to clip your legs? These majestic birds are meant to fly and if properly trained will rarely fly away from you. It is such a horrible recommendation.

If people can't take the time to train the bird properly than the recommendation should be not to get a parrot, not clip it's wings.

Also a lot of behavioral problems such as biting, screaming and feather plucking comes from clipped wings. This is an absolutely horrible recommendation in such a book, not to mention it is inhuman to sever the wings of your own pet that you bought in the first place to shower with love.

I also don't understand the recommendation that commercial pellet food must be included in the diet... so how do birds in nature survive without commercial pellet food?

Summary: Very scant on useful information. Some nice info, general details and history with beautiful pics, but 'complete manual' ends there.

Pretty book for the coffee table but that is about it.

    Plenty more info needed.

Save your money and get a better book.

We really enjoyed this book, we have a Blue & Gold Macaw named Lucky, and he is a corker I tell you; the more we could learn about him before we got him the BETTER let me tell you; this book helped us prepare for sure!
Plus the book shipped pretty quickly and in new shape, just like we ordered, would definely buy from them again, THANK YOU

This is a nice little book with quite some interesting facts about macaws. Don't expect too much of it though. Our macaw was already adult when we got it and reacted quite opposite than suggested in the book. For instance when we placed a fresh branch with leaves, the bird didn't like it at all and refused to come near to it until we moved it to the house's floor (our bird house is 2 x 1.75 x 1.8 meters). When the bird goes to the floor to take a bath, he walks way around it. When we give him a dry piece of wood (of the sane tree) he likes it much better.
Still the book contains valuable information. We will have to read some more books in order to be able to recommend others.
