Andrew Rossos was born in Greek (Aegean) Macedonia. He was educated in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), Canada, and the United States, receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He is currently professor of history at the University of Toronto, Canada.

GREAT READ!!!

Mr Andrew Rossos has done a wonderful job and his point of view, true prospective is from a "Dopi" a (native) local "Macedonian". The West propaganda machine is filled with ignorance the "Macedonian culture" has existed for thousands of years and is the oldest of Europe. Like many natives peoples around the world the "Macedonians" have also been dealt cruel cards as they've been brutally killed and abused in there own lands!!! I would suggest before you judge try to have compassion over the "Macedonians"before labelling them Bulgarians, Greeks or whatever you think as you may one day become the minority in your own lands? Many natives peoples around the world would fully identify with this truthful factual book about what has happened and still happening to this day to the "Macedonians". Like the Welsh. Scott's and Irish the "Macedonians"have been robbed of their native culture language and history!!! The truth is that Macedonians have always been Macedonians and they themselves know who they are and don't care what anyone else labels them throughout history!!!

Very biased book

This is a very biased book. It is clearly a repetition of the arguments of the Skopje propaganda machine dressed up as " history ". It grossly manipulates the avalable information and misinforms the reader about the situation in the Balkans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it covers up the oppressive policies of the Tito regime against the Bulgarian and Greeks in Vardar Macedonia; it cooks population statistics; it never discusses the continuing suppression of the Albanian minority; it falsifies the numbers of the Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia - currently estimated to 40%; and it does not face the issues of falsification of history for which both Bulgarians and Greeks acuse the Skopje regime. Mr Rossos is obviously a very motivated Slavic Macedonian but this type of books do not help the situation in the Balkans , they just make the ultranationalists happy. Mr Rossos also avoid the real question of the future of Macedonia: what will happen when, due to their high birth rates,in one generation the Albanians will become the majority in this republic? and all the bets are that this currently suppressed minority will demand their rights?

Incompetent Storytelling in the Service of A Biased History

The author needs to go back to school and learn to write a coherent historical narrative. Time and again. Rossos talks about a detail from the life of a person or movement he hasn't yet introduced. Then he moves forward in time, only to introduce the character or movement for the first time, long after discussing him or it. It's maddening to try to make sense of the historical narrative when it's so garbled.
This would be bad enough if Rossos were simply trying to explain Macedonian history. What makes it worse is that, when one can disentangle his abominable storytelling, one realizes that Rossos is writing a very tendentious, polemical history of Macedonia, from the perspective of a fierce, xenophobic nationalism.
So, after spending several hours on this book, one realizes that this was time wasted on a poorly-written, arrogant, and biased narrative.

Nationalist Advocacy

Nationalist advocacy tract, of the romantic/primordialist type. There are only three surprising facts about this book, which is otherwise unremarkable. They are, (a) that it was published in 2008 (rather than some fifty years earlier); (b) that its author teaches at the U of Toronto (Canada); and, (c) that it is published by the Hoover Institution Press. It brings little credit indeed to either institution involved.
