Lohrey ruminates productively on the big questions here, artfully drawing on his own unusual mix of life experiences: growing up in Memphis, teaching school in South Central L.A., living in China, Saudi Arabia and Japan. These locales are all feature in the book. Lohrey employs his dry wit very effectively throughout. He is a keen observer and it’s clear he made friends with the absurdities of life long ago. He gets in some well-placed jabs at modern life without working too hard or going on too long. Contemporary references pop up periodically to help ground things in the 21st Century and generally keep things fresh.
