Praise for The Macho Paradox
"An honest, intellectually rigorous and insightful work that challenges readers to truly engage in a political discourse that can change lives, communities and nations."
--Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes
"Jackson Katz is an American hero! With integrity and courage, he has taken his message--that the epidemic of violence against women is a men's issue--into athletic terms, the military and frat houses across the country. His book explains carefully and convincingly why--and how--men can become part of the solution, and work with women to build a world in which everyone is safer."
--Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America, spokesperson, National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS)
"If only men would read Katz's book, it could serve as a potent form of male consciousness-raising."
--Publishers Weekly
"This book leaves no man behind when it comes to taking violence against women personally....After reading this book you can see how important it is to be a stand-up guy and not a standy-by guy, no matter what race or culture you come from."
--Alfred L. McMichael, 14th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps and now serving as the Sergeant Major of NATO
"A candid look at the cultural factors that lend themselves to tolerance of abuse and violence against women."
--Booklist
"These pages will empower both men and women to end the scourge of male violence and abuse. Katz knows how to cut to the core of the issues, demonstrating undeniably that stopping the degradation of women should be every man's priority."
--Lundy Bancroft, author of Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men

My mother only liked classical music,Beethoven,Bach & Mozart,no rock & she played their music on the piano. When I was playing this album and she came into the room when Letting Go was on,she asked me is that Paul McCartney and I said yes and she said Oh that music is brilliant,he's a music genius like Beethoven!
And my sister who is 4 years older than me and had a big diverse music collection since she was a mid teen, bought Venus and Mars when it came out,and I remember listening to it with her,and her friend and my best friend and we all loved it! My sister still says years later that Venus and Mars is one of the best rock albums she ever heard and that it's unique and she knows no album like it!She always said his 1971 Ram album was a very good album too, although I like this album much better. Paul's best post Beatles sounding music was from 1970-1975,with this being his last true great album. After this he wrote some good music but he never wrote the same great quality music again for some reason.
His first solo album McCartney where he played every instrument by himself (and he played them all great) is very good,Red Rose Speedway and Band On The Run are very good albums too,and he produced all of these great albums by himself and co-arranged the music on Venus and Mars by him self also.
If you do a search in this book for "abusive women," you get NO hits. Not one. In a 500 page book on gender violence, this author does not mention once that woman can and are abusive toward men, but for the purely practical reason of size, they do not beat men up. My ex-wife like destroying my possessions, throwing pickle jars at me (I once cut my foot so badly I needed a hospital), slapping me in public, threatening me with a knife, and then there is the verbal abuse which really hurts more than the physical. Yet, this is not mentioned once. Do a search in this book for "abusive women" and you get nothing. Do one for "abusive men", and you get upward of 100 hits.
I am only going to say one other thing, and this is his assertion that gay men somehow have "male privilege", and he sites the Matthew Shepard murder as an example. This is idiocy. I've never met a woman who cannot adopt kids like gay men cannot. I've never met a woman who cannot marry the man (or woman) she loves. I have never met a woman who cannot make life or death decisions about their partners if they are dying. In high school in Utah, I heard kids say, "let's go find some gay students and beat them up for fun." GAY MEN do not have "male privileged" as this author asserts. They are regarded as far less than women
who love other women, who tend to fascinate men for reasons I personally, as a heterosexual male, do not understand.
Okay, so Katz hits you over the head for 400 pages about how women who are victims of crime. This is true, unfortunately. That pornography is sick and abusive is true, and I've always thought that, and gotten some crap thrown at me by male friend who called me a "feminist" because I do not like going to strip clubs or red light districts. Men can be pigs. But, I also want to point out that Cosmo and almost all women's magazines have TWO main issues for women: sex and losing weight. Most men's magazines that are not pornographic emphasize the same things, possibly replacing weight loss with "getting ripped pectorals." Sex sells, for women and men. The women on the front of Cosmo are just as scantly clad as the women in the men's magazine right next to it.
It is not that Katz does not make good points. But, this book also doesn't touch on the millions of non-abusive men who get divorced and find themselves unable to see their children because of the sexism of custody laws. There are millions of good men out there who lose the opportunity to be a good father because they get divorced. I've known women addicted to heroin and without jobs who still win custody over an established man with steady work and no heroin because the courts almost always find in favour of the women. This is even more pronounced outside the United States. In Canada and the UK, it is a given that a divorced man is going to only babysit his kids once in a while. Usually these men are not abusive.
Mr. Katz, if you read this, I think you have made your point. But, 400 pages of making the same point kinda hurts the head after a while. I would not buy this book. You can get all his ideas on his website, and it is presented in a much shorter form!
