It boasts the same signature VLZ3 high headroom / low noise design that makes others in the series prized in studios and stages worldwide, including premium XDR2 preamps, an ultra-musical EQ and modern summing bus architecture. Ideal for home studio and on-the-go applications, the 802-VLZ3 makes premium mixing capabilities available for setups where space, and money, are tight. It’s all the mixer you need, in a footprint that fits just about anywhere, at a price that fits your budget.

XDR2 preamps: Extended Dynamic Range=Extended Sonic Possibilities
XDR2 Among the features that have earned the VLZ3 mixers their stellar reputation are the XDR2 "Extended Dynamic Range" mic preamps. That’s because serious amounts of time and energy went into their design, and the result is phenomenal. You simply won’t find preamps this good on any other mixer in this price range. The XDR2 preamps deliver pure, clean studio-grade sound—the kind of quality you’d expect to find in pricey boutique mic pres. They have an incredibly wide frequency range, especially in the low end, and even at extremely high gain settings. They offer incredibly low noise, amazing RFI rejection, and with 60dB of available gain per channel, the 802-VLZ3 can handle inputs ranging from a whisper to a scream. With the superior sound of the 802-VLZ3’s three XDR2 preamps, rest assured you will always get optimum performance out of your professional ribbon, dynamic, and condenser mics. Read more.

Super-Musical EQ for Super Tweaking Latitude
EQ KnobsThe 802-VLZ3’s ultra-musical 3-band Active EQ provides precise control over the full frequency spectrum, giving you ultimate sound shaping latitude. We invested tremendous resources into optimizing the center frequencies of our EQs, and improved the interaction of the separate EQ bands, so your tracks can be molded and tweaked for just the right result. Low shelving at 80Hz, mid peaking at 2.5kHz and high shelving at 12kHz mean you can quickly and effectively sculpt your tone for the ultimate in punch, fullness, and brilliance—and with up to 15dB boost/cut capability per band, you get loads of room to move…and experiment. There’s also a 100Hz low cut/high pass switch for each mic input, so you can keep the muddiness out of your sound—and give lows that extra punch if used in conjunction with the Low EQ. Read more

Fully pro, fully featured
A completely pro mini-desk, the 802-VLZ3 delivers a comprehensive set of mission-critical mixing tools. Five full channel strips let you easily get your hands on your mix, while bright 12-segment stereo meters allow for ultra-accurate metering. The dedicated Stereo Return channel lets you connect external components, such as effects units or mp3 players, so you can incorporate your favorite sounds or prerecorded material into your tracks. You also get Hi Z inputs on channels 1 and 2 for recording instruments such as electric guitar and basses direct—no external gear required—and phantom power is provided for your studio condenser mics. The PFL solo function lets you easily set your gain to perfect levels, and high pass filters allow you to cut low frequency rumble—100Hz and below—on channels 1 to 3. The 802-VLZ3 also gives you essential engineering features including separate control room volume and phones knobs. And thanks to our clever engineers, the "mute" button actually serves a dual purpose— signals from muted channels are secretly routed to the Alt 3-4 outputs and also into the Control Room section, ideal for creating submixes, previewing channels, or creating a "mix minus" for broadcast applications.

Ultra-compact, sleek, rugged chassis
802VLZ3 ProfileNow you can have your pro mixer, and fit it in your workspace, too. The 802-VLZ3 features a tight, low-profile design that fits the most modest—or congested—of areas perfectly. Like all VLZ3 mixers, the 802-VLZ3 is built like a tank, too. Our legendary solid-steel chassis can take the kind of abuse that would turn our competitors’ flimsy boxes into twisted chunks of debris. Instead of cheap, unsealed potentiometers, we use co-molded pots, which offer substantial strain and impact relief. By design, our control knobs ‘ride’ just above the surface of the chassis, so if something falls onto the mixer, the impact is transferred from the knobs to the chassis—not to the potentiometers or circuit board. Finally, we use thick, horizontally mounted fiberglass PC boards to eliminate the potential for damage and brace them with a shock-absorbing support structure. And not only is the 802-VLZ3 tough, but it can be flexibly positioned, thanks to a bottom panel that lets you easily mount an optional mic stand adapter with just a few screws. Attach your 802-VLZ3 to a mic stand, and you can adjust its height and angle to suit your unique—or weird—work style.

The "V" stands for Versatility
Okay, not really, but the 802-VLZ3 is just that—versatile. With its pro features and small footprint, it’s ideal for a variety of applications, including home and project studio recording, sound reinforcement, multimedia projects, field mixing, broadcast use, and post-production work. (Wanna see how you can put it all together? Check out our hookup guide.)

Less Really Is More
The 802-VLZ3 gives new meaning to the old adage, less is more. While there are other under-12-channel mixers out in the world these days, none provide the performance or sound quality of the 802-VLZ3. Thanks to its ultra-compact, pro design, you get the low input count you want, the extra space you need, and the quality you deserve—all at an unbelievably low price. Put simply, the 802-VLZ3 is the go-anywhere, fit-anywhere professional mixer, delivering superior sound quality—and unbeatable value.

I was looking to upgrade my previous Behringer mixer of 6 years. I did some research and was eye balling a Yamaha usb mixer. I went to my local music store for the Yamaha and none were in stock. Debating whether I should in-store order the Yamaha the sales rep asked me what I was looking for in a mixer and I replied "Better quality than my Behringer" He then told me about Mackie's top notch quality. Now I've been to a couple of professional studios that have Mackie and a recording class I took in College used them, It never occurred to me that I could afford one for my home studio. The Mackie 802-VLZ3 fit within my budget so I bought it, knowing I'd return it if I wasn't satisfied.

I brought it home hooked it up and listened to music 2 hours straight, extremely pleased with the quality and low noise of this unit. Mabye it was the difference from my old mixer that wowed me but it was definitely worth the 2hundred I spent. I highly recommend a great pair of studio quality head phones or monitors to accompany this mixer if you don't have already. It also comes with a free 'Tracktion' recording software.

Now if only they can have usb connectivity for the same price!

I am relatively new to professional audio with my budding voice-over operation and small home recording studio. I read about a variety of mixers. There are many models and most do essentially the same things. What sold me (other than the extensive feature list) was a YouTube video in which Mackie engineers tortured the 802-VLZ3 and several other makes of similar smaller mixers. When the 802-VLZ3 survived being driven over by a Jeep and the others didn't, I was sold. For my home studio, the 802-VLZ3 has plenty of inputs and capabilities. The mike preamp is virtually noise-free. The controls are solid and smooth. The connectors are robust and solid. Everything has a solid feel. It's quality through and through. In the few months that I've used the mixer I have enjoyed trouble-free operation. I have yet to exceed its capabilities and my recordings come out great. This Mackie mixer is a solid performer and a great first mixer for the home recording newbie.

I used to think that a mixer would not be of any value to me because I am a solo hobby musician and usually use only one input source (Rode NT4 stereo mic), but a mixer does so much more than just connect multiple inputs together. If you're not experienced with using a mixer, just know that it will almost certainly improve your audio (often dramatically). This mixer is different from cheaper mixers, because even though it's a "small" mixer, it's built with the same high-quality electronics that are used in much more expensive mixers. In a nutshell, a mixer and lots of time experimenting is absolutely necessary to get the best sound from your setup. Mackie provides very easy-to-understand (yet detailed) information (download pdf) on how to use the various features. They even provide several examples of how to make all the connections on various setups. I currently have about $6000 worth of audio gear, and I can make it all sound absolutely mesmerizing, or make it sound terrible, depending on how everything is connected, routed, adjusted, etc.

I have it hooked up to an RCF 312a powered speaker, my laptop and a Behringer microphone. It sounds OUTSTANDING, literally ZERO distortion or noise. It may not be the cheapest mixer in it's class but based on what I have researched and the results I have heard it's a really nice package that does everything I could hope for with room to grow. Can't wait to get a condenser mic and do some recording. It's built like a tank too....I like that!

Bought this Mackie 802 based upon the recommendation of a musician for use with my portable PA system. It improved the sound coming from my system immediately, made mixing microphone and music playback from laptop computer a high quality production. Very pleased with this mixer. Vocals via microphones are clear and easily balanced - a great tool for portable church work.

This thing is really handy and they are built pretty tuff. I have it's larger brother the 14 and it rocks. My only complaint and this is a huge one is the power plug. I hate that it has a special power plug. Almost all DJ gear has switched to the IEC power plug. It's nice because then if you forget the power cord you can just grab another from a piece of gear you aren't using. This doesn't have that option though. It's larger brother does though and thats nice. I also can't imagine rack mounting this with that huge of a cord in the box... What a wast of space that would be. Of course rack mounting this would defeat the purpose.

I bought the bag for this little mixer too. I keep all the cords to hook it up and the power cord in there.

I understand that the power plug is an AC Adapter so that means the mixer doesn't have that built in and someone will say they wanted to save the space, and possibly heat. But i'm saying they shouldn't have. To have an IEC plug would be better than the extra inch and little bit of heat this would have produced.

- Size
- XLR outputs
- XLR mic inputs
- Phantom power
- Head phone jack
- Stereo Inputs
- 3 way EQ
- 1 Aux outputs
- 1/4 in outputs
- Mute buttons
- 5 channels without doubling up (wow)

- AC Adapter
- Only rca inputs are tape ins, which confuse most people, one of the channels should have had rca inputs or both aux imput channels should have
- No sliders, but size limits this

All in all this unit is perfect for me. It's kind of a little pricey for what it does. But i needed something small like this for some gigs.
