The speakers have potential. When they worked they were good for a simple set of bookshelf/computer speakers, but I would caution purchasing for safety reasons.
It's a shame, because these are lovely, clear, and neutral--great for video work. Nice transparent highs. Good look, solid-seeming build.
UPDATE: The selector switch finally failed for good, rendering these useless.
SECOND UPDATE: After another round with customer service, they did replace these out of warranty. So far so good with the second pair.
My issue just started happening, the little left/right selector switch on the back started cutting out one of the speakers for no reason. I've never even used the switch and i've never moved the speakers, moving the switch a few times will usually bring the sound back but it always ends up wiggling itself out again later.
Very annoying and cheap, almost unusable now
edit: switch has gotten even worse. Now introducing static into the sound and cutting out more frequently.
No response after contacting mackie directly. Avoid this brand, pretty bad when they cant even last 2 years and my father still has 30 year old speakers that work perfectly
Edit again: did eventually contact me and sent me a new set that they told me is a new revision that shouldn’t have this issue anymore, but this set is already showing signs of another problem. I am getting loud static now when the volume is halfway and it gets louder anything higher.
Lol still such a joke of a product, waste of time
These were 5 star speakers until they just stopped working I bought them in August of 2016 and they have been the kind of awesome quality and sound you expect from Mackie then one day recently they went silent. Now I can either pay a bunch of money for shipping for them to decide if they are under warranty or throw them away :-(
These Mackie's are unreal for the money, I wouldn't flinch at $100 each, not $100 per pair! But they are, and in that regard they are really great speakers for general use (PC speakers, gaming, multimedia, etc.)
For studio monitors they aren't completely transparent and don't have a razor flat frequency response, but if you already have good ears and experience with recording then these are great "B" monitors or primary monitors if it's for home recording and demos, etc.
They have a bit of mid and bass hype but actually it's very small...if you "learn" them over the course of a week, along with some mix testing on other sources (car stereo, iPhone speaker, other speakers) you can mix any project on these no problem.
They are very present and the stereo spread soundstaging is quite good. With music being listened to more and more on ear buds, cell phone speakers and other poor quality speakers the Mackies are perfect for getting great mixes and using their less than perfect (and it's really a small 'less that's), you can mix with the end user in mind from jumpstreet. It's why engineers use the little Auratone speaker and have for years, to check mixes on inferior playback speakers..."if the mix sounds good on it, the mix will sound good anywhere" mentality except the Mackies really do sound great, they are amazing really.
If you need some monitors you may want to try these and see what myself and others here have been saying, these speakers are, for the price, an almost essential gear purchase for a home studio. Even if you don't open them and store them for emergency back up monitors, whatever...but just get them.

Unfortunately, the circuit board which contains the amplifier is glued to the metal back panel of the main speaker, thus making replacement of even the simplest component almost impossible (Switch, inputs, outputs etc. ). The speaker positioning switch is cheap and prone to failure (thus making your speakers completely silent or single-channelled!), it has failed on mine. With that glued circuit board, I was unable to replace even that very simple component.
For its utter failure in making a repairable product, I give these one star over five. Avoid at all cost, unless you don't mind buying unrepairable crap. I'm moving to something more reliable, and repairable.
Be aware that they have a big 10db wave around 100hz (fake bass) and they also suffers in the high end but it is possible to fix them a bit with an EQ.
Presence and precision is OK but far from great. They are good everyday general purpose computer speaker, they are OK at best for music, and poor as studio monitor. Definitely not Reference speakers.
I'm opting for 4 stars because I'm getting this heating issue on one of the speaker (Powered Speaker). I don't know if this is normal or not, coz' this thing heats up at about 15mins of usage. That's a small amount of time. Though it doesn't gets too hot, just keeps me worried at times. Didn't get any problems though. The cables that comes alongwith the monitors works fine too.
