The Saitek Cyborg V.1 joystick works absolutely flawlessly in Battlefield 3. Every button was able to be bound, and the throttle control even works. I had zero issues whatsoever in using this joystick with BF3. I literally plugged it in - and it just worked.
As far as the joystick itself, I'm not exactly a joystick connoisseur...however I can confidently say that the feel and performance of it is exactly what I expected. No frills, it just works, and it has the features I wanted (Z-Axis). I wouldn't say that it feels cheap, although it is very light.
Now as far as drawbacks go, no product is without faults. The Saitek Cyborg V.1 is no exception to that rule, but I didn't find anything worth taking a star away. The USB cord is somewhat short, the joystick itself is somewhat light so in heavy use you will need to hold it down with your free hand, there is a button that falls right underneath my ring finger that I often find myself hitting under heavy use...though I didn't bind it to anything (so it does nothing), and finally the resistance of the stick itself feels maybe a touch high considering the weight of the stick.
One of the most inexpensive joysticks out there
Plenty of buttons
Works absolutely flawlessly with Battlefield 3
It just plain works
USB cord is a little short
Very light weight (can move under heavy use)
Resistance may be a little high for some
I still suck at flying jets in BF3
I love Logitech joysticks and peripherals, however at half the price of their comparable joystick, the Saitek Cyborg V.1 is an absolute bargain.
Pros: Well packaged. The stick has just the right amount of resistance to allow good feedback, but still not wear you out after a few hours flying. The base looks odd, but grips most any surface very well, and has enough weight that I'm not worried about aggressive flying. 7 buttons (13 with a shift), a hat, throttle control, and rudder twist on the stick. All with a good feel and sound to them. Plastic isn't top shelf, but for the price it's much better quality than I expected. It has an exciting, aggressive look to it, and it looks even better in person.
Cons: The stick tension is held with a spring, that may wear out with constant abuse/use. I'm planning on flying for a couple hours a night for the next 6 months minimum, so I'll try and update this with wear/tear issues. From the look/feel I'm anticipating it should last quite a while.
Thoughts: Overall a good quality stick for a great price. Will easily serve beginners and some vets no problem. Like almost all other joysticks I doubt the throttle control will work, but we'll see, I'm setting up several games tonight.
Update: (1 week ownership) I've used this almost every night and it works really well. Granted I've been playing older games with it, but it holds up, and the Rudder twist is nice. The Throttle works fine, you just have to calibrate it. The base is quite sturdy, but my excited flying (heavy dogfighting) tends to make the base want to lift off the table. With only a little effort I can keep it down just fine. I still recommend this stick to anyone.
Caveat: My first attempt to install the customization software saw errors when I tried to run it... and the installer file was 124MB(?!?). I must have done the wrong one, and will try again. More news on that yet to come.
Games tried with:
Wing Commander II
Wing Commander Privateer
Battlefield 1942 (planes only)
Works perfect for all of them!
It is still going strong, although it creaks a bit and fine control has become difficult which suggests the hinges need lubricating - of course, it has been through a year of moderately intense use. If I set the throttle at a certain position, the software input fluctuates by maybe 1 or 2%, but is far from unusable. No other issues so far, I would say its a pretty solid product.
First impressions are okay, the stick seems to be made of good quality plastic, and the LED on the tip is pretty cool. The stick doesn't twist over a wide range so it may be more difficult to achieve fine control, however that really isn't a problem for civilian flight sim games I play. I love the throttle lever, seeing my own lever rising in conjunction with the on-screen airliner's is really an upgrade over my previous joystick's slider. The pinkie button is a design flaw, don't assign it to do anything and you'll be fine. The trigger doesn't have much depth so pressing it doesn't feel very rewarding. Ergonomically the joystick is symmetrical so it doesn't feel as good as my right-handed joystick, but its plenty usable and the button positioning is pretty excellent (aside from the pinkie button). Can't speak about its portability just yet but I am planning on taking it places so the detachable stand seems like a nice feature, only time will tell if the ability to disassemble is worth the increase in size. The joystick is supposed to come with a two-year warranty, according to the warranty card in the box, so hopefully it will last.
