Any Spinning class is, first and foremost, about how skilled the instructor is. Doug Katona, a Spinning Master Instructor, is excellent. This is a man who absolutely knows what he's doing and how to expertly teach a Spinning workout. The warm up period is decent, so you're ready for the workout proper. He explains the objectives of the class, so you know what you'll be doing and why. He teaches correct form, so you avoid strains and injury. He covers the Perceived Exertion Scale, so those not using a Spinning Computer aren't left out. He reminds you about breathing, so you can keep going. Above all, he motivates and challenges you without jabbering on and on the whole time. The warm down, stretching exercises (off the bike of course!) and hydration tips are absolutely text book. If you want to see exactly how a Spinning class should be taught, watch this DVD.
The workout itself is for the Endurance Energy Zone. It is the foundation of the Spinning programme and the source of your ability to tackle the other Energy Zones. Many people mistakenly believe that unless you barely complete a Spinning class, are drenched in sweat, can hardly stand up and are practically dead by the end, then you haven't had a decent workout. The "Suzie Psycho Spin" crowd as my old Spinning instructor used to call them. These people massively miss the point. A Spinning class is as easy or as difficult as you wish to make it. You control the resistance knob after all! The point behind the Endurance Zone is to build your aerobic base by gradually achieving a sustainable cadence, resistance level and heart rate and then staying there for a prolonged period of time. That takes patience, skill and determination. It also takes as much mental toughness as it does physical endurance. Doug guides you through this workout with much style and precision. It is not easy and repeated viewings of this DVD will considerably enhance your skill and cycling ability. It'll also target your fat reserves for fuel to sustain you through the workout. Remember, if you're constantly out of breath then you're working out anaerobically, you're burning little to no fat (you need to breath in oxygen to burn your fat reserves!) and you won't be able to last very long. In contrast, this DVD will help you get into your fat burning zone and keep you there. Over time you'll be able to measure your progress by keeping a record of your heart rate for the different cadences taught on this DVD.
In short: Excellent instructor, awesome workout and great DVD. Highly recommended.
Enjoy the ride!
This is not interval training or hill training. I certainly got a good workout from it. the music is not what you would expect, but to tell you the truth, you are so focused on what you are doing and listening to the next change that I really didn't notice the music that much. I think I will be using this DVD at different level of intensity as my fitness improves, certainly will not get bored of it anytime soon.
