First off, this movie is a passion project that was produced over some 30 years by Phil Tippett. There is almost no voice acting in this movie at all, and it has an avant-garde, bizarre, and downright creepy vibe to it that only gets more and more surreal as it goes on. Understanding what's going on requires a bit of imagination, even once it's over. All of the information you need is there, you just may need to reflect on it for a while. I had no real expectations for this movie, was thoroughly surprised and shocked by it at times, and I came away from it with a strange feeling that few movies have ever made me feel. Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It's a piece of surreal art that will keep you thinking about it for a long time.
I only give this 4 stars instead of 5 because the average viewer is very unlikely to appreciate this movie. If you're a fan of artistic avant-garde films, you will love Mad God. But if you're not into that kind of thing, then you're best off avoiding this or you may come away with some nightmare fuel and little to no enjoyment.
That said, I still recommend this movie. I want to watch it again.
Furthermore, the oft repeated "30 years in the making" is a clear misnomer. Tippet has stated that there was a period he was working on the project, then stopped and picked it up again a few years ago. There is a frustratingly clear break between the original material and the material later made to round it out into a full-length film. The live action parts used to stitch together the different segments were obviously recorded recently as well as the majority of the alchemist scene (the ending). It is patently obvious that the live action parts were devised as a means of filling out the film without the time and effort that stop motion requires. That, plus the tacked-on computer effects stand in start contrast to the admittedly dated but nonetheless detailed and fascinating stop motion segments towards the beginning and patched in towards the end. (There's a small vignette near the end that takes place in a specimen tank that feels both visually and tonally wholly incongruous with the rest of the film and may have even been unrelated to the project until fairly late in its production) Even the stop motion scenes often feel like they were called done halfway through development. One scene involving a vehicle is clearly just a RC car (specifically a mildly modified and repainted miniature of a Volkswagen Thing) with a little model in it being driven through a bunch of pyrotechnics. This plus the live action stuff added later serves to prevent the viewer from adequately finding any sense of immersion despite the occasionally technically masterful elements of stop motion peppered throughout.
Although it lacks a clear narrative, that is not to say it does not utilize motif and allegory at every possible opportunity. Unfortunately the subtext is layered on with quite a heavy brush and any insights about the creators perspectives on War, the Nature of Capitalism, Absurdism, Children, Hospitals, Theology etc. are all of the most obvious and one dimensional variety. Saying there's something under the surface of this film is like saying there's something under the surface of your bed when you already know it's your dog. You can clearly see him under the blanket and his tail is wagging in his eagerness to be found by you.
Despite all of that, I suppose there are worse ways to spend about an hour and a half. If you are a fan of bizarro film and twisted imagery you won't feel your time is totally wasted. There is enough here to have fun with and enjoy visually that despite its many flaws its fun with a little weed and some beer. To call it a masterpiece as some have done however, is quite a reach.
