We are now watching "Mad Men" for the third time, not counting when it first aired. For the past several months we have watched an episode every evening. We are amazed at the writing, the details of the era. Jon Hamm was amazing in the role, never a false move.

Even the series finale, which left me with mixed feelings, was brilliant and well-written. This is a series I wish could go on and on.

I agree that the song choice could have been better, The McGuire Sisters' version of "Volare" drives me nuts with their mispronunciation of the Italian word "volare" and Rosemary Clooney's "Botch-A- Me" would not have been among her choice to add (she didn't like doing Mitch Miller's arrangements), overall I think that the song choice and original music merit the soundtrack as being at least a 4 star rating. For the people who are too young to remember AM radio, songs were always cut to the two to three minute mark for airplay. Therefore, complaining that Vic Damone or Bobby Vinton's songs being cut or faded out prematurely must remember that the song would have been heard by most people that way, and in that sense the MADMEN writers/composers are going for the authenticity of the time that is being portrayed.

I own all three and they are all equally great. This one is particularly sexy and sleek: even if you are not into the show, you should still check this one out. I love all the songs here, since it is hard to get away from their soulfulness in the collection's totality. A very-well realized collection to be sure, and a great adventure.
Very glad to own these three CDs, and I will be buying the fourth one as soon as it comes out.

I am a big fan of the Mad Men Series. Their use of great sixties music is a must have. This CD is so enjoyable you will feel like you are back in this era.

The music was used very strategically and poetically in the t.v. series, in fact I can't help associating certain songs with certain scenes (i.e. "Lipstick" playing with Joan in front of the one way glass, Roger talking to her as they 'walk' to his office).
I only wish I could find the Genre that it falls into; David Carbonara did excellent work creating it and the Mad Men Suite for the show, but since he's a contemporary it's difficult to track down similar songs with that distinctive cool jazz feel (and looking up "xylophone", a primary ingredient in his songs and other 60's tunes, just leads to hilarity :).
All in all, the best t.v. soundtrack I've heard since (yes, I admit it) Ally McBeal.

Mad about Mad Men
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2011Verified Purchase
As a huge fan of Mad Men since it first hit our screens and DVD shelves in 2009, I purchased this CD as a Christmas present for my wife - also an avid fan. Having just signed off on season 4, this collection transports you back to season 1, effortlessly capturing the innocence of the era, when Don's marriage was still in its halcyon days, there were no hostile takeovers in the air or political assassinations in the background. As we listened on Christmas Day, there seemed something aptly Christmasey about a number of the tracks.
Opening with the uplifting strings and soaring voice of Vic Damone, 'On the street where you live' carries you as if on an aerial camera ride surveying the city streets from above, setting the tone for the ensuing numbers. This drifts into a gentle, jaunty version of 'Volare' by the McGuire Sisters, followed by an almost Beatles 'Michelle' guitar opening to a jazz samba-ey instrumental 'Lipstick'. Up next the dreamy, super cheesey 'PS I Love You' by Bobby Vinton - typical fayre for the 1960s. The superbly wacky 'Botch-a-me' is an americanised version of the Italian Ba-Ba-Baciami. No collection from this era would be complete without a Frank Sinatra number and here we have Julie London's gentle bossa-infused take on 'Fly Me to the Moon'. Ella Fitzgerald's 'Manhattan' pays homage to the 60s glamour of Mad Men's Madison Avenue location. Thankfully, the compilers made the decision to include David Carbonara's original modern compositions 'Mad Men Suite' and 'Babylon', the latter transporting you back to Don's visit to a beatnik club in Greenwich Village and perhaps the strongest sign so far that all is not as it looks in Don's world.
RJD2's memorable modern title sequence contrasts with the rest of the CD, and now you can enjoy it in full beyond the 60 second programme intro. Highly recommended for all fans of the show and era.

Great Official Soundtrack
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 3, 2013Verified Purchase
I ordered this because I was looking for "official" music from the show, not some sort of "inspired by" collection (if which there are many). And I'm happy to report that this delivers! The music is fabulous and the liner notes by series creator Matt Weiner are an added bonus. I wish/hope that amc/Lionsgate releases more of these official soundtracks for all the seasons because I would surely collect them all!
