Madame Alexander Monkey Love 18" Play Doll
Monkey Love doll has blue eyes and long blonde hair that's held in place by a red satin headband that's enhanced by the addition of a pretty red bow. She's wearing an adorable red and white striped, dropped waist, dress that has sleeves made from a red and white circle print and finished off with a purl edging. Black grosgrain ribbon, tied into a bow, encircles the dress, just above the flounce. And, on the front of the dress there is....what else....a print of monkey...a brown, cream and blue monkey wearing a sailor's cap and surrounded by red hearts Red, white, grey and navy blue are combined to create the 'abstract print' from which her leggings are made and these along with red wedgie sandals completes Monkey Love's ensemble.

I have actually handled three different brands: the real AG, Alexander, and Journey. I have seen the Adora and Gotz in their boxes. All of these dolls use the same clothes and accessories.
The Journey is from Toysrus and runs $30. It comes in several color choices, but still fairly limited. The arms and legs are a bit slimmer and loose in the joints. I could not get it stand on its own. While I could easily see through to roots, the hair is full, beautiful, and easy to play with. The eyes are fixed, always remaining open. The body is soft only from the waist down, so she is not very cuddly. The overall look is more teenage with larger head, slimmer body proportions. Stunning eyes and fun clothes. It seems a quality, Chinese-made doll.
The Alexander dolls retain that look for which the little porcelains are known, giving her a very pretty face. The color choices are more varied, but still not close to the AG options. The body has vinyl chest plate to just below the underarms. The cloth body is not as firmly stuffed as the AG doll, making the legs a bit looser, but still able to stand on her own. Her body is proportioned exactly like the AG, but her head is larger. The eyes close and have the same lashes as the AG. The clothes are cute and well-made. Other reviewers have criticized the hair quality on these dolls, and I have to agree. While the hair is nicely attached, it is very fine and unevenly cut. (I will be giving her a trim when my daughter isn't looking.). Other quality issues include a couple of tiny shiny spots on the vinyl (like glue got on it and was wiped off) and a little bubble in the pupil of one eye. Overall my daughter loves her and she is still a very nice Chinese-made doll, well worth the $30-45 price.
The Adora dolls are made by the same company that produces the Marie Osmond collectible dolls. Sold at Target. Several color options, but again rather limited. Same proportions as the AG, but the face is not as round. Look is more baby doll-like with large eyes and full lips. It has the vinyl chest plate and eyes that close. Like the AG dolls, they come in a simpler outfits unless you choose one of the limited editions. I believe this is a wigged doll (can't remember for sure). Again, a quality Chinese-made doll well worth the $45 price.
The Gotz dolls are very limited in color options, but are made in Germany by the same company who made the AG dolls before selling to Matel. The same AG quality, but retails for $20 less and is available in stores. The clothes are fun, classic styles. The face is timeless with a wide smile. The body is soft to the neck like the AG. The eyes close. The hair is the same top quality, but rooted instead of wigged like the AG.
Much of my information I gleaned from the ladies at a reputable, local doll shop. They had several different dolls on display (out of the box) so I could compare. They also gave me great advice. AG dolls are meant for owners age 8 & older. Younger children are not ready for $100 dolls. Also, if your child has never had a 18 inch doll before, the ladies recommend buying the less expensive "entry level" dolls. Once interest and responsibility is proven, invest in the AG doll.
No matter what, the doll is meant to bring joy to your little loved one. Personal preference needs to weigh heavily in your doll purchase. My daughter is thrilled with this doll and will make many memories with her.
Update: Adora dolls are available through Target.com, but I don't know if they are available in stores. Target does carry another doll (on-line and in stores) called Our Generation for $20-30. I handled a well-loved one. Same body proportions, a bit slimmer face. Face is a bit older looking, slimmer nose and closed smile. Eyes open and close. Hair is rooted and nicely attached, seemed nice for a well-loved doll. Totally soft body, but no strings dangling. Firmly stuffed, so I could still get her to stand (just barely). The arms seem a bit broad and stiff.
I never gave much thought to the ultra cheap ($22) Springfield doll since I just can't imagine that it could be decent quality, but another reviewer mentioned this brand. They can be found at Michaels And Joanns stores (coupons anyone?). They have the toothy smile like the AG dolls and come in a few color options. Soft bodied, rooted hair, eyes that open/close. All Caucasian choices have bangs.
