- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024To my own shame, I listened to the critics, the YouTube rage reviewers, etc. and unfairly judged Madame Webb without seeing it. Now that I have seen it, it's great. It may not be the best superhero movie ever (the same can be said for just about EVERY superhero movie that's come out in the last several years), but it benefits from having most of the elements I love in a great movie: exotic locales, an interesting cast, plenty of fantastic elements, adventure, and characters I care about. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and that's all I ask of any movie.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2024S.J. Clarkson’s 2024 film “Madame Web” tells a story set within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe starring Dakota Johnson as Cassandra “Cassie” Webb/Madame Web. Joining Johnson in the lead roles are Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwell (based on Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Woman from the Marvel comics and later Arachne before becoming Madame Web in her own right), Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon (based on Aña Sofia Corazón, who used the superhero name Araña and became the third Spider-Girl), Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin (the niece of J. Jonah Jameson in the comics and the third Spider-Woman), and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims (a character who intersected with Peter Parker and Cindy Moon in the Marvel comics, helping to introduce the concept of the Spider-Verse back in June 2001). Finally, Adam Scott portrays Ben Parker, Emma Roberts is his sister Mary Parker, and Zosia Mamet plays Ezekiel’s assistant Amaria.
The film’s version of Ezekiel Sims radically departs from the comics, having sought a Peruvian spider for its healing properties and instead received spider powers. In the process, he betrayed Cassie’s mother. His powers gave him visions indicating that one of three Spider-Women will kill him, so he seeks out Julia, Anya, and Mattie in order to defeat them before they can end him. Cassie, having received her own precognitive abilities due to an accident, can see events in the “spider world” and works to find and protect the Spider-Women. Many of the other spider-powered heroes have teamed up before in the comics, so Clarkson’s film borrows from that tradition. The film introduces Las Arañas, a Spider Society akin to that found in the Araña comics.
The fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, “Madame Web” continues the trend of borrowing from earlier comic book film styles, in particular those of the early 2000s. “Madame Web” seems to constantly be chasing the vibe of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and even features allusions to its continuity with Michael Papajohn reprising his role from “Spider-Man” and “Spider-Man 3.” Though not necessarily as good as the first two “Venom” films, “Madame Web” is far better than “Morbuis” in my opinion as I’ve long been a fan of Spider-Woman and it’s nice to see these versions of the Spider-Women make their feature film debuts. Clarkson and her production team also seem to have a greater self-awareness than the makers of “Morbius” with several scenes winking at viewers to join in on the fun. Finally, it’s visually interesting with creative costume designs, bright colors, and dramatic lighting rather than the washed-out look that characterizes so many CGI-filled blockbusters nowadays.
Bonus features on this 4K and Blu-Ray set include a gag reel, easter eggs, “Oracle of the Page,” “Fight Like a Spider,” a deleted scene, “Future Vision,” and “Casting the Web.”

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Sony Pictures continues to expand upon its Spider-Man movie properties by creating spin-offs of characters from comic books and making them into movies. Venom and Morbius have been released to mixed responses from audiences and now they continue with Madame Web.
2003. Cassandra Webb is a young woman who has made saving people her profession as an EMT, but something has changed within her after a near-death experience transforms her into a powerful psychic. Saving people is no longer a job, but her life as she sees into the future and witnesses three young girls in danger from a violent individual. Anya Corazon, Julia Cornwall, and Mattie Franklin are hunted by a dangerous individual who sees them as the eventual cause of his demise, a demise he is desperate to ward off because he has used the power he has greedily accumulated over the years, having stolen it from good people. Only Cassandra can find out how to stop this villain.
I have heard nothing but negative things about the making of this movie and heard it compared to less successful comic book movies. This movie isn't great but it's not the worst movie in the world. Though I can see why people would think otherwise. By itself, this is a splendid movie, but because it is tied up with Spider-Man and yet the character does not appear at all, it frustrates fans who want to see a Spider-Man movie. Also, it is the adaptation of a character that is far different from the original story. I do love the actresses but make no mistake, this movie's target is women and girls, while the original story itself was sold to entertain men and boys.
This Steelbook set is great, Sony knows how to make a good 4K/Blu-ray. Leave your spot, turn off the player, then turn it back on and you pop back where you left off. The Blu-ray contains the special features only, and they are okay, with modest stuff concerning the behind-the-scenes. I disliked the feminist viewpoints of the writer/director/actresses involved. I can see why this movie failed. Only one deleted scene. Still, this had a free 4K Digital Copy.

Hugo Cesar MartinezReviewed in Mexico on December 2, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Pelicula Entretenida de Marvel

SILVIO OJEDA TABASCOReviewed in Mexico on June 27, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Buena presentación en 4K UHD
