Top Customer Reviews
Edited on 8 September 2012: I did actually return 13 and have been playing 12 since. 12 is still plenty active as far as online play goes, so I encourage anyone who does not think that 13 is worth it to join me and mine in the 12 lobbies. We can't expect EA to change a damn thing unless we refuse to use their (latest) product(s).
Earth to the NFL: A lack of competition will kill a desire for your product...wait, I think that is the point of some of your most effective rules towards that every end... isn't it?!? Let there be a fair competition and let the best "team" win!!!!
Edited on 6 December 2012: The commercials that are coming out recently - that claim "it's the best Madden ever!" - make me laugh so hard I can hardly breathe. We customers, and loyal Madden fans, have clearly stated here on Amazon that it is one of the worst ever; the number of 1 star reviews speaks volumes. I just hope EA's blind-insane-apathetic-denial doesn't affect the next one... I have already heard quite a few people (strangers and friends) on Live say they are not planning to buy "14". Low sales is the only thing that will effect change; so I hope they stand by that claim.
Online code is included in the game required if you want to play online and one of our codes went inactive prompting us to buy a new one within 3 days? Lost playtime while we wait for them to sort that out and not fun after shelling out $60 for it.
No streamlined way to play tournaments or career mode without a bunch of stuff we're not that interested in. Sure, it looks pretty fun for the hardcore player, but it gets tedious delegating all these tasks for those of us not that interested in trading, cutting, drafting, practicing when we just want to play each other in a season for bragging rights.
No tutorial or anything at all to orient new players. I couldn't even find anything within the game or "online manual" on how the kickoff controls worked. While figuring stuff out like this was what we did back in the day, please take the time to develop a quick tutorial to walk your new players through how to play the game and provide consistent tips. This is especially terrible for players who are very new to football with nothing in the manual or anywhere giving them some direction on where to start. They clearly are expecting the same people to shell out $60 each year and with all the money can't be bothered to set something up.
The menu system is terrible. It feels like this game takes a long time to start up and the UI isn't streamlined to get you to where you want quickly enough. Settings and features are duplicated across several tabs and sometimes it's unclear where to go for what type of game you want. I'm told last year's game was better in this regard.
For some reason there seem to be a ton of banned words. I tried to create a community with 6 different names with all innocuous terms - not even any tongue in cheek sexual references or anything. All rejected for inappropriate content. Typing on an xbox is a pain enough, finally just put in random letters to get something going. Seriously? For $60 and a PRIVATE league, you shouldn't be so discriminating about our names.
Custom Teams - I remember some older games had some options to name your own teams, design some uniforms, logos, etc. Not apparent you can do this here, maybe not EA's fault as much as NFL's restrictive licensing. Also seems you can't run a Career mode with a smaller league - would be fun to do one with only 8 teams so we don't spend so much time playing computers. Cutomizeability like that is what I would expect from a game franchise with a new game every year since 1988.
If I had my way, I would return it.
Unfortunately for me, because the online code is required the resale value takes a hit as well.
