After watching the whole series and follow-up movie straight through literally ~10x, I was admittedly sad and desperate for more. Then quickly realized, “Wait, the manga!” and was fortunate enough to be able to splurge on volumes 1-9 at once. (Btw, the official anthology is cute and also worth getting, if you’re really into the series!)
The books are beautiful, nicely sized (bigger than standard manga size, or at least how they were sized when I used to collect them ~a decade ago), have extra (canon, of course!) tidbits of info + lil side explanations, etc, and contain more details about the story overall! Not to mention the beautiful full-colored illustrations. I’ve been lovingly staring at them ok my bookshelf from across the room since I got them, as I’m in no rush to catch up to where the manga currently is... :’)
Alternatively, if you’re not familiar with the series and somehow stumbled upon the manga and are reading this review... GET IT. Get it all, watch it all, take it all in, and do it again and again. Such an amazing wholesome yet heavy and dark series, full of terrifying yet magical, ethereal creatures and situations. I cannot do it justice!
[LIGHT SPOILERS]
The story-line is well driven, with the idea of a town built around an abyss being a great starting point for what's coming ahead. But, there's a reason why the abyss is often referred to as "the netherworld," and it affects anyone who dares to challenge the call of the abyss. As the series develops, you'll follow the protagonist's journey into the abyss and recognize the challenges and trials that lies ahead. The motive for the journey seems humble, but gets questioned if it's worth the risk further down the line. Needless to say, plenty of action is available in the book with a decent amount of drama and coated with suspense. [/SPOILERS]
As much as I love the book, it's definitely an adult manga, and I do have to question why they label the back of the book as "late teen". There are scenes in the book that might not be considered "socially acceptable" for lack of better words. I hesitate to say it's not lewd and it's purpose in the book is appointed because of "plot," but it's presence is notable and may turn people off of the series. If this is of a concern, I recommend watching the Anime adaptation of the series as it's more censored in this regard. But, as the series continues, occurrences of this kind are much less common (at least up to book 6 so far)
As for volume 1 things start off with a more fun light hearted aspects of adventuring. That being said it does do a nice job of establishing a sense of danger lurking in the depths of the abyss. In ways the setting is very similar to dungeon crawler RPG like Syrian Odyssey. With the Abyss being largely a mystery that adventurers having attempted for fame, fortune or other reasons but so far no one has truly discovered what lays at the bottom. The volume also does a great job of making the world feel alive with it's creature and artifacts bios. Really the only that was a bit off putting for myself was it's humor at times. That being said this is the start of a memorable journey that shouldn't be overlooked. -MickManga

Uma das melhores histórias da atualidade, mesmo sendo uma fantasia, ele trata dos problemas e perigos de maneira bem real com personagens inteligentes, sem falar da arte incrivel
Did I say it has a great story?
