The theme they were probably trying to teach is teamwork can overcome adversity. and family is not just blood but those who love you most.
I was a little disturbed by the thought a bunch of what 7 year old were allowed to run around on the Paris metro and no adult took note and made sure they were ok.
If you think of it The rescuers is an even more disturbing theme a kidnapped child from an orphanage is used to find a diamond, motivated by having her sole prized possession ripped from her, Endangered by rising tide in an underwater cave, Then held at gunpoint by her captor. Who while they did not show it it was certainly implied beat her. & did show verbally abuse her. in comparison this movie is very very tame.

At this point we turned off the movie. I don't know why we waited so long. I guess I just never believed the writers would ever take the story down such a terrifying & dark path. I feel so mislead and angry and my child was simply frozen with fear. We had to read many books after switching it off to get some of the imagery out of her mind.
This was not at all appropriate for a 3-yr old (or a 4-yr old or a 5-yr old). Thank goodness I watched it with her! Otherwise who knows what else she was going to be exposed to. Why, oh why, do they make these kid videos so awful???
It's very rare in this era of "the birth family is the best place for children" that we get a movie that says "family means the people that love you"and that's why people hate this movie. Notice, that most of the bad reviews are written by parents with biological children, and not by parents with adopted children. Just so you know, I was seven when I watched this movie and was not scared by it, because of that I feel like an alien. I am 16 now and can notice the movie's theme, and why the reviews are bad. This Madeline story, because of its theme, is close to my heart.
