I read it over two days and thoroughly enjoyed it. At no time did I stop and compare her with GH, so engrossing was the story.
Other reviewers have mentioned problems with the dialogue. I personally did not find any problems with this aspect of the book. The heroine reminded me strongly of Leonie in Georgette Heyer's 'These Old Shades.'
If you like clean reads, fiery heroines and witty heroes, you will like this book. It is well written and flows well with a story-line that was unique.
Ms. Bailey presents a tight, complex plot, interesting characters, comfortable use of the time period and languages -- all things that are all too rare in most books. Heck, half the books I have read lately have not even been properly edited or proofread. What a pleasure to read a book where these things can be taken for granted as they ought to be!
Mademoiselle at Arms is a romp in the style of Georgette Heyer: sweet, funny, and with romance deftly woven into a plot that stands on its own. It reminds me a bit of Talisman Ring.
Very highly recommended.
The h seemed to at times be a little inconsistent, at one time she wells a knife, gun and dagger quickly at the H but then later when the villain attacks her she seems to forget to pull out her dagger and protect herself when openings arise. Also she has no control of her tongue with the H but then with the villain she can hold her tongue. But beyond those inconsistencies I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will look for more from this author. But I recommend to always read the ratings to make sure the book is clean-up of that is important to you.
