I just didn't jell with the main character as she instantly was embroiled with a tragic death. We didn't get to 'know' Julia or her friends. We only met them through vile actions by others.
I will read the next novel as I normally give an author two chances. This story was well done but just not a cozy murder.
You may wonder why that could make any difference in a reader’s enjoyment. In this book you are literally at the 50 percent mark before Julia starts ‘detecting’ anything. So cozy readers that are used to the main character asking about motives or a person’s alibi early on, may think this book has a really slow start. Cozies in general tend to have a wonderful little town with lovely people and one dastardly, bad guy. In the Madness of Mercury, it is a much larger town and there are multiple threats to Julia and her friends. There are some serious themes about how the elderly are treated, how politicians may not be honoring their citizens, a religious figure may not have love in their heart, and a few other heavier themes not usually found in cozies.
I don’t like to give anything away about mystery novels, I did have a beef with the character not calling the police after a particular incident. In general, I felt the interlocking pieces and relationships worked well. There was plenty of action as plots and plans collided into a satisfying ending.
I was provided a copy of this book free in order to read it and write my honest review.
Evandra Gamble, Julia's elderly client, confides in her that someone is trying to cause her harm. Since Evandra has been recently showing signs of dementia, Julia is hesitant to believe her. But when she consult's Evandra's astrological charts, Julia seems that there is something sinister. It doesn't help that the Gamble household is in turmoil: a long lost nephew has shown up, Evandra's overly stressed niece and her ex husband are on site trying to reconcile, Evandra's sister Eunice has become obsessed with a religious zealot who has moved to the area and her daytime caregiver is acting suspiciously. Could one of them be trying to harm Evandra? Or has Evandra lost her mind? Julia doesn't know, but the astrological charts point to danger.
When a body is found on the Gamble property, Julia realizes that Evandra may not be safe. To make matters worse, the religious leader and his followers are now targeting Julia and her friends in the community. The police are more of a hindrance than help. Julia decides to help Evandra, find out if a murder occurred and save her career before everything falls apart.
Julia is a great character, she's stubborn but loyal to a fault! She is willing to do anything, including putting her life in danger to by fighting fires, taking on fanatics with a water hose, escaping bad situations and doing last minute Christmas shopping! The astrological information located throughout the novel is fun! I enjoyed the first book in this series and I look forward to the next book in this series!!
I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review!
