What's missing is Louie Eppolito's shadow life. While employed as a New York City police officer and later detective, Eppolito was concurrently in the employ of Luchese Family Underboss Anthony 'Gaspipe' Casso. Eppolito committed multiple acts of murder on behalf of Gaspipe Casso and Casso's associate Burt Kaplan. Eppolito murdered Hasidic jewelers. He murdered high-ranking mobsters and kidnapped low-level associates. Of course, none of this factual information is included in Mafia Cop.
Also barely mentioned in Mafia Cop is Eppolito's partner, the redoubtable Steve Caracappa. As cops, they grew together and they slew together. Their partnership took off like a rocket when they were first paired together in the NYPD's Robbery Squad. An apt position, as Eppolito and Caracappa reportedly supplemented their NYPD income by placing bags on their heads and robbing bodegas.
Wat kind of cop was Eppolito? One story tells it all. A renegade drug dealer named Frank Fiala was murdered. Eppolito was the lead detective on the case. What did the case remain unsolved? Because, as he testified later under oath, the murderer Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano paid Eppolito $5,000 to bury the case.
I could go on and on. For the best book to understand what REALLY went on in Eppolito's 'other' job, read The Brotherhoods by Guy Lawson. The Brotherhoods is simply a tour de force in the True Crime category. I read it a half-dozen times and I will again. The authors of that book were highly suspicious of many claims Eppolito made in Mafia Cop. Read both and draw your own conclusions.
