Editorial Reviews

Italy's FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE has finished work on its second album, a 5-track EP titled Mafia. Vocalist Paolo Rossi comments:

"The album focuses on the connection between racketeering and illness. It's like a hidden sickness that consumes us from deep within and that can't be erased, unless you decide to wake up and face it. Mafia is like an octopus, whose tentacles grab everyone's free will, and pushes everybody in fear. Mafia is dedicated to all the people who lost their life fighting against these criminals." Paolo Rossi

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at 16th Cellar Studio in Rome by Stefano "Saul" Morabito.

This EP is the most brutal thing I've ever heard. I'm pretty sure the drummer is an octopus (it's so nice they put him on the cover!) It sounds best played so loud that it pisses your neighbors off. Their cover of At The Gates' "Blinded By Fear" is coming from somewhere in the vicinity of Saturn. It's unearthly. They have taken technical metal and given it claws and teeth. This is good to work out to, or chop wood, or drink a ton of coffee and bang your head into a cement wall. Perhaps even make sweet love to sandpaper. Just get it. Thank me in the morning as you're taking painkillers and cleaning up the blood.

This is one of the best death metal EPs I've heard this decade. There aren't too many extreme metal bands trying to fuse death metal and classical music, and these guys make it work. Furious, blinding-speed death metal with some addictive melodies, fluid guitar leads and solos, spot-on clean vocals interspersed here and there (with impressive range), and even some orchestral segments woven in (the transition between "Abyssal" and "Conspiracy of Silence is utterly devastating). Most bands that achieve this level of brutality in their music tend to be very one-dimensional, but nothing could be further from the truth here. I believe that they've taken a big step towards mastering this sound, and when they finally do achieve their vision, it will destroy everything that's come before it.

Can't wait for the next full-length!

What I love about this band is how unique they are in a crowded genre. Yes, they are technical death metal. And, yes, they are fast and brutal. But, what I love of them is the atmosphere, the textures, the clarity, and the concepts. They really turn something brutal into something beautiful and this album illustrates that clearly in its delivery. Although short (well, it is an EP), the quality is fantastic, with each song gripping you in its tentacles. The variety is also commendable with clean vocal parts, pianos, and neo-classical solos, yet it is all tastefully done. While some bands do these types of things for shock value, Fleshgod does this to get a point across and convey their theme. This is what I love about this band, and I can't wait for their sophomore full-length!

If you are a fan of death metal, then this is a mandatory purchase as it is one of the best recent death metal releases you can spend your money on. What is great about this band is they also won't remind you of any other band; they are unique and definitely not copy-cats! If you don't like death metal but don't mind extreme music, then this CD will also not disappoint and you may just be able to appreciate it. If you do not like death metal, then don't bother, because you won't get it; it is definitely a brutal CD!

All in all, this is a brilliant release. I can't wait until the next album!

Right off the jump, if you like Fleshgod Apocalypse, pick this EP up. It's worthy of their banner and a great time. For the rest of you who've never listened to this band before, it's a great starting place. It's short, to the point, and showcases some of their best work. Mafia is only five songs long and only runs twenty-four minutes, but it's an absolutely intense twenty-four minutes. The instrumentation on Mafia is certainly a refined form of extreme metal, and with the symphonic influences it has a very broad sense of scale that's truly amazing. The EP features four original songs and a cover of "Blinded By Fear" by At the Gates, which I found to be quite enjoyable. My only real gripe with the EP is that it feels like it just flies by, which given the running time is somewhat true. In conclusion, Mafia is a great addition to any metal fan's collection and is a solid release from the Italian extreme metal masters, Fleshgod Apocalypse.

MAFIA by FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE is a fascinating EP. Yes, it is insanely fast, crushing, and brain-pulverizing, but it's also melodic and beautiful in spots. The vocals squeal and vomit forth death-lava, then turn around and get operatic! This is amazing stuff! Have no fear, the technical aspects are intact. The drums are a twisting mass of pile-drivers, caught in an F5 tornado cluster! The guitars speed up to particle accelerator levels! MAFIA is an experiment in brutality as art. Nothing can possibly prepare you for the title track's haunting piano! I'm breathless!...
