I'm the type of gamer who does not buy games at $60. I'll wait until the game drops in price and buy it new or used several months after the fact. I'm not on the cutting edge. So, I missed all of the hype (positive and negative) for this game.
I'm also the type of gamer who has but a few hours a week to devote to gaming. I can claw out 10 hours, maybe, between a job, social life, etc, to play. While I can appreciate GTA IV or Mass Effect 2, I can't readily plunk down the 40 hours it takes to make it through them (and understand that I've started Mass Effect 2 and GTA IV but had to give them up because a lack of continuity of play tends to ruin those games).
Before I bought Mafia II I read a curious review at Eurogamer (one of my few trusted gaming review sites). Eurogamer did not like the game at all. Now I understand why. Eurogamer wanted "GTA: 1940s" (they were probably giddy when Rockstar's LA Noir came out). When the reviewer went in with that expectation, they were very upset that it did not live up to that expectation.
Mafia II is not a sandbox game. It uses an engine that would support a sandbox game. This is merely as a means to establish a place and tone, which Mafia II does very well (those early 1940s chapters are especially well done, with radio DJs talking about the war, the look of buildings and cars, etc). Do NOT expect to be able to freely roam or explore. Understand that you're in a world but that you will be confined to a certain path.
This is because Mafia II wants to tell you a story, not let you freely be a mobster in the 1940s and 1950s. Some will be disappointed in this. I liked it because Mafia II is a very well written, reasonably tightly crafted game. It clocks in at 15 chapters and will take you maybe a week or so to beat. I could get into the world, play the character, live his life, and leave. It was engrossing and enjoyable. Unlike other reviewers I was not bothered by the linear story but instead found that it mostly hit its emotional points successfully.
I also wasn't bothered by the other problems reviewers have noticed. The cars handle terribly, yes, but isn't this fairly realistic (especially in the snow)? Keeping an eye out for cops makes the game more interesting. I did not mind driving between point A and point B at 40 mph because the scenery, voice acting, and story were interesting.
So, if you go in with the right understanding, that this is a 15 chapter story that you will live, you will enjoy this game. If you expect free roaming and side quests, you will be disappointed. I especially enjoyed the early, snow-covered part of the game. It looked beautiful and more games should have worlds that look that good.
A note about the extra material in the Platinum Hits collection - it is almost like 2K Czech outsourced this part of the game to a completely different studio. The draw of Mafia II is the story and gameplay; the bonus games (DLC) completely ditch any story and instead focus on points and timing. It is a really odd juxtaposition and I stopped playing the bonus games because there was no story to latch onto.
The Story:
- Takes place in a fictional 1940s-1950s Empire Bay (combination of New York, Boston, and other large cities)
- The main character Vito Scalleta grows up in Little Italy, where he and his friend Joe get caught stealing. Joe escapes and you choose to go fight in WW2 instead of going to jail. You come back from the war and start working for the Mafia because of Joe.
Pros:
- The gameplay is pretty fun, you could compare the gameplay to GTA. It's a cover-based third person shooter. The controls take some getting used to, but it's not that bad.
- There is a decent variety of things to do.
- Extraordinary story and great immersion
- Good voice acting
- The Platinum Hits version comes with all the DLC disk and the DLC is pretty much another game
- Chapters are paced pretty well and it doesn't feel like it slows down.
Cons:
- Rather repetitive.
- Being stealthy does offer enough gameplay, it's more fun to just dive in and try to survive gang fights.
Other:
- I got 860G on one playthrough on Hard
- The DLC is pretty much an entirely new game that just takes place in Empire Bay
- The main story has 14 chapters.
Buy this game:
- You want to enjoy an excellent mafia story
- It's under $20
Don't buy this game if:
- You want lots of sidequests.
I thought the game was phenomenal. Its plays like GTA but in the 1940s and 50s. You cant go wrong here if you love the Rockstar style open world games. This also has one of the best stories I have played in a while. I felt close to the characters as we progressed through the story. There are also some very surprising twists and turns, taking you through time and different settings. In short, the combat is great, the story is great, the missions are fun, and things are kept fresh and interesting. I loved it.
Dont let the negative reviews fool you, I did not find anything terribly wrong with the game. Its perhaps a bit of the short side, but that's about it. I had no issues with driving as some reviewers had. This is actually one of the best driving games I have played.
If you own a 360, you need to play this game, its a steal at 20 bucks.

Missions and shooting. Like GT4. It is good but not 5 star good.
まぁ、モザイク無しが気になる、英語字幕が気にならない人は、購入されるといいかな?
因みに私は、国内版とアジア版と2つ持ってます(笑)
デザインは一緒だが、タイトルが浮き出しになっている。
