I usually love Joy/Deja King and Michelle Monay's books but this one was subpar. One of the main problems is that the plot is so prediactable. In a genre like urban fiction alot of avid readers (including myself) needs some type of distiction so the book can stand out but this one doesn't. There are too many characters and why does every main character have to have a hood name? I think there is another book maybe not written by either author that has the love interest being a different Quasim. There are too many characters introduced in this book which would make any reader confused. I found myeslf having to back track. And why the flashbacks? They go back and forth and it gets frustrating why not put them in the beginning of the book. Im sorry but this book gets a thumbs down. Im tired of reading the rags to riches stories about these chicks (who are always bi racial) that meet a drug king pin and their problems go away. For once I would like for Ms. King to write a book about a couple that grinds together and makes it to the top instead of a white knight in shining armor story. This book gets one star. Do Better.

In Mafia Princess, Joy King & Michelle Monay bring us an intense street drama complete with a fast-pace and mind-gripping story. Never being ones to disappoint, both ladies bring us a cast of colorful characters, each having depth and evolving throughout the story. I particularly enjoyed the use of metaphors throughout the novel to describe one's thoughts and feelings, it was incredible how with mere words these ladies were able to evoke a plethora of emotions from the readers.

However, I did take issue with a couple of things. The first being that once again we're presented with colorful characters having depth and going through changes, but hardly any of which are likeable. Not everyone celebrates and glorifies, drug dealers, murderes, and skanks who serve as bait for robberies and at times it is just plain annoying to have to wallow amongst such scum page after page. But hey, it makes for great reading! The second thing that bothered my were the factual descrepencies regarding the mob. There were Dominican drug dealers talking about living by "La Cosa Nostra" which is a term used by the ITALIAN mob since early 16th century Italy. That was just plain ridiculous to me. I am writing a book involving the mob myself, and I know for a fact that it requires a huge amount of research. Otherwise your book lacks authenticity. When you do not take care to research your facts, some books, especially urban books, can have that "Mob Gimmick" Master P No Limit in the late 90's feel that just gives it a watered-down, commercial feel that is not appealing at all.

Nevertheless, I loved the book, am reading part 2 and am salivating at the mouth for the 3rd novel. Keep the great books coming ladies!!!

Great book! This one is one of the best books yet. I really cannot believe how things turned out. Semaj is a chick who doesnt love easily so you will find how she started to love and her world started to crumble around her. I got a feeling about some people who we think died did not and is coming back for revenge(Qua I am hoping) Cannot wait until part two drops. Great job I am glad I came across your books they are amazing. Keep up the wonderful work

I have to first say that the editing was HORRIBLE! I cringed reading it. There were too many passages were "big words" were used incorrectly, out of context...don't known if that was the fault of the author, or a bad editor, but it was irritating! And that's not to mention the many grammatical errors, misplaced, random commas, etc. Poor editing is one of my pet peeves in urban fiction.

As far as the story goes, it was...just okay. Nothing stands out to me, nothing memorable. Also, there were too many coincidental things thrown in. Quasim offers Semaj a movie role, but doesn't remember her as the girl he saw perform not that long ago? Hmm... Tala is the responsible aunt to Semaj, but then all of a sudden she turns into a cokehead (with no build-up to it or explanation other than that Paris was doing it too)?

There are personality conflicts too. Semaj is portrayed as ruthless - watching her father, Murder Mitch, kill the people she sets up to be robbed. Then all of a sudden she's a college student studying drama/theater? What? That's just one example, but there are many I'm not going to go into so I don't ruin the story for anyone who hasn't read it.

The whole thing feels rushed and one-dimensional. As I said, it was just "okay", I've read worse, but I've also definitely read much better in the urban fiction genre.
