Excellent as a bracket/mount; speakerphone, GPS only OK

Hi,
I've been using this mount for months now and overall I'm pleased with it. The best thing about it is it holds the phone really well. It was secure using my 3Gs and now with my iPhone 4. The telescoping top bracket allows it to accommodate a wide variety of cases too (Note: I did have trouble with the Apple Bumper case as mentioned below). The thirty pin dock connector at the bottom also pivots. This makes it much easier to get the iPhone in and out of the mount.

Here are some other notes:

Positives:
- Holds the phone very securely
- Easily switches very smoothly from portrait to landscape
- Charges the phone (though not very quickly if it all when using the GPS)
- Provides an audio output jack so you can leave the cable connected when you remove the phone

Negatives:
- The speakerphone quality is only marginal. I wasn't expecting it to be great and it's not.
- The GPS reception is disappointing. Considering they market the built in GPS heavily you would expect it to pickup a really strong signal. My standalone Garmin Nuvi walks all over it when it comes to reception
- The volume dial is very poorly placed. It's on the side behind the phone. I always struggle with adjusting it while I'm driving.
- The bracket blocks the camera. I thought it would be cool if I could snap pictures/take video while driving but that's not going to happen.
- It would not charge using the Apple Bumper Case on my iPhone 4. It does charge with my other cases including the Otterbox Commuter. The bumper case is just a little too thick at the bottom. To be fair a lot of my other iPhone accessories (cables, speakers, etc.) don't work with the bumper case either
- It costs too darn much for what you get. The value proposition would be much better if it cost $50 or even $75 instead of $100+

If you're looking for a speaker phone you can do much better. For me it works well using my iPhone 4, Otterbox Commuter case, and TomTom's navigation software.

For The Most Part It's Very Good

I use this with an iPhone 3GS with Navigon's Mobile Navigator application. It's done a very good job for me and outside of a few minor gripes I'd highly recommend it. I tested this against a brand new Garmin GPS unit and much to my surprise the signal and performance was better with the Car Kit + iPhone so I returned the Garmin and stuck with this.

The main gripe I have is the AUX audio, when you have an AUX cable in the audio still comes out of the phone too. For whatever reason it does this I have no idea! It's not a big deal really since I hardly use the AUX output , it's just a stupid design.

But otherwise it's been a very steady and reliable device that I have come to rely on several days per week in my travels. The bluetooth for phone calls seems to work just fine, people never have an issues with hearing me and I can (usually) hear them just fine. The built in speaker is a little weak but that's to be expected on such a small unit.

The increased GPS signal helps a lot , especially living in the city (Chicago) like I do, without the stronger GPS signal it's very hard to get a steady signal but with it it's been much better.

I read comments from others about it not charging their phone. Having it on the Car Kit does in fact charge the phone, but because a GPS app on a phone sucks the life out of the battery, the charging of the phone really just keeps the battery from going down while it's in use. You will see minimal positive gains to the battery level while the GPS is being use, but you won't it go down either. Without the unit charging you'd be lucky to get 2 hours of GPS use out of a full iPhone battery, but with the phone in the charger you can use it all day long.

If you are going to shuffle this baby around often I HIGHLY recommend you get a case for it. Otherwise it could get banged up very easily otherwise. I had the lighter adapter break while in transit and it was a pain to get it replaced. A standard lighter adapter would not work with it. I tried several of them to no avail and then I got a replacement directly from Magellan and it worked fine again.
