Overall the most impressive thing about this unit is it's size and build quality. So compact yet with maps for the entire US and North America.
I think that it should have come with an in-home plug-in charger in addition to the in car charger, but that's my pet peeve.
One of the larger omissions (IMHO) was not stating on the box or in the literature that updating the software and maps in the navigation unit requires a Windows PC. It can NOT be updated via any Apple computers. Ouch!
Finally, I am told the map updates are around $80. Sounds steep, but considering what it takes to update a digital map of the entire US, a fairly cheap price. And frankly, unless you are driving somewhere that has brand new roads, you won't notice the difference. You could just wait and buy an entirely new unit every few years for not much more money. But I actually believe that it's a good idea to support the updating of the maps by purchasing an update.
The technical support I received (when I had a question about how to switch the map from 2D to a 3D view and back) was very competent, and surprised me considering the initial purchase price of the unit. Magellan seems to have good people and customer friendly policies.
I LOVE THIS GPS except for one software issue. When saving addresses you have the option of creating a "category" to put the address into. This is like a sub-folder in the address book. For example, you can make a category for "Restaurants" or "Hotels" or "Friends & Relatives" etc. This is an awsome feature, BUT here is the issue: You had better be absolutely sure that you want this category and that you spell its name correctly, because you CANNOT revise the name of the category and you cannot even delete it. Its there for good! So, if you know this ahead of time, you will be alright. You can just be very sure of which categories you want before you create them.
I used to work as a software test engineer and would never have allowed this issue to go into production. I called Magellan support and they are aware of it and hopefully it will be fixed in a future software update.
I still like this GPS better than the TomTom's and Garmins. It is more simple and easy to use, has great volume, screen resolution, and brightness. Sure, in bright sunlight its harder to see, but they all are. Sure, some address are missing, but overall its pretty good.
The first thing I did upon recieving the GPS was charge (by taking a test drive) then update the software. This was a very simple and straight forward activity. I did have some issues with receiving the free map update within 30 days of purchase, but this is still being worked on. I had to verify my date of purchase (via invoice) with Magellan customer service which has been completed and approved. Now, I guess I just have to download the new map.
I have read a bunch of reviews on how the GPS lags your current position by a bit. I did notice this during my first test drive. However, after updating the system this went away. There is no longer any lag between my actual postiion and the position illustrated on the GPS unit.
One of the main reasons I didn't go with a Garmin was that I read a bunch of reviews on how quiet those systems tend to be. I only have the volume set to about 60% and even at that level The Magellan 1424 is plenty loud enough to hear over both wind and radio noise. In fact, the first thing my wife commented on was how easy it was to hear.
The one negative I have noticed so far, is that it's not always easy to understand the spoken street names. I'm not sure if this is an inherent problem with the technology or if it's just an issue with this model. However, after the GPS calls out a street name, I will often have to look at the screen to read the name of the street.
Overall, though, I find it to be a very nice GPS and infinetly nicer than my previous Magellan Maestro that was a couple of years old.
