I always like the bell sound before each turn (you have the option of selecting different sounds or turning it off). Rerouting is quick. I haven't tried the WiFi capability yet. Tour Director is great. I found out with the help of a Magellan rep that you can add personal addresses to a tour by creating the tour with predefined places first, 'optimize' it, then click 'GO' to begin your journey. Then go to the Main Menu and click on 'Edit Trip'. Now you can add any personal addresses or personal entries saved in the Address Book and 'optimize' the tour again.
I have no problems with the accuracy of the maps, so far. It always got me to where I wanted to go, so far. Be aware with the option(s) you select to get you to your destination ('avoid toll roads', 'shortest path', 'fastest time', etc.) as those particular algorithms will be used throughout your journey unless you go in and choose a different option.
Remember to also buy a separate charger (not included with the GPS) so you can plan your trip at home. Bon voyage and good luck with finding the right GPS for you.
UPDATED 5/19/12: (There is a remedy for this see UPDATED 6/1/12 below)
After updating to the latest software (1.42) and map version (45), the GPS no longer function as fast as it used to be with the previous map version (43). Very slow to calculate new routes (or recalculate if you take a wrong turn by accident). Not as quick as it used to be. The processing speed after updating to the new map is now similar to that of the slower models of Magellan's GPS, despite having a faster processor. It also freezes more often, especially when searching for POIs, when typing in a city after choosing 'near city' to narrow the search. Not sure why. Might be something to do with the software/code of the new map. A bit disappointed. It took me nearly 4 hours to download and update to the latest map. This is because I have an old XP Pentium 1.5 GHz machine.
Talked with customer service at Magellan and was told to hold down the ON/OFF button for about 10-15 seconds while it is ON to turn it OFF to reset the device. Preferably do this outside. I did this (twice to make sure it did reset) and the device showed some improvement in response. The recalculating of routes for wrong turns is still a bit slow but much better than that after the new map was updated.
I finally decided to return the device and swapped it for a new one. So now I'm using it without updating the core software and maps fearing it might slows down again. I've decided to wait another year or so until a new fix is out before updating anything from Magellan website.
After downloading and updating software version 1.43, the 5175TLM works even better than before. I took it for a test run before updating to the new map version 45.
Next after downloading and updating to map version 45, the GPS totally slowed down everything from turning on to re-calculating and routing.
So it's clear that it's not the software that's causing the slowing response of the 5175TLM but the new map version 45.
Although I have managed to make this Magellan work for me, by updating the latest core software only and NOT updating the maps (I am sacrificing this), I totally agree with some of the comments left by other people saying that this device can be dangerous and can cause accidents by having it in your car because of its extremely slow re-calculating time and freezing problems.
Pros: Many! but below are the "new" ones added in this model:
- Lifetime maps and traffic.
- The Traffic report give you an alternate route if the current route has an incident with "time to destination" for you to decide if you want to accept it.
- You can see all "data" (mph/time/elevation/speed, etc.) at the same time (briefly) if you want.
- It knows the speed limits of FWY and interior roads (though not all of them). This is GREAT -see below.
- I set the "warning" at 10-mph over the speed limit and it beeps and warns if you reach 8-mph over the speed limit. If this GPS saves you one ticket, it is worth it!
- The Green line of the route becomes yellow or red depending on traffic so you can see where the problem is if you zoom out.
- Plugging the unit is a snap. The "key" simply guides it into place.
- I am patient with touching the buttons but it is true like other reviewers said: The reaction time is slow compared to older models.
- It takes an "unacceptable" amount of time to correct itself and find where it is causing us to miss a turn! I noticed however that it was cloudy.. Still, previous models did NOT loose position that easily. Again this happens when you deviate from the route because you have to or you missed a turn.
- This problem is for ALL new Magellans: They made the suction cup too small so it looks good. Sadly, after few months of use or due to high heat/very cold windshield (even when new), the suction cup will NOT stay and the GPS will drop down to the floor as you drive or when you return to the car. The suction cup needs to be 1/2" bigger in Diameter.
I highly rate Magellan GPS'es, this one, however, is a 3-1/2 star. You will find your way... It does what is supposed to... If you ask me which issue bothers me the most? It is the suction cup!
