I found this device at a local Goodwill store, where Target evidently sends a bunch of its returned merchandise. For less than $20, I figured it had issue(s), but was worth a bet that I could get it working. I guessed right, but if I'd known how inexpensive these were new, I probably would have calculated differently. The unit had frozen in the midst of an upgrade. Looking at reviews and forums here and elsewhere, this seems to be a too-common problem with either this unit or the Content Manager software. I strongly suspect that buyers have been attempting the upgrade right out of the box, without heeding the admonition to have the unit fully charged first. I have to blame Magellan, though, for selling the device with just a 12V car charger. Since most cars don't supply power to their lighter plugs unless the ignition is on, getting this thing fully charged is anything but quick or convenient. After I got the device charged, though, the Content Manager software (downloaded to my laptop from Magellan) registered the device and completed the upgrade. At the time, I had not yet found the instructions provided by Lori in these reviews, and I turned out not to need those. The Content Manager (goofy interface right out of 1994) just loaded new firmware to the bricked unit. An on-screen message then directed me to turn the unit off and on again while connected to the computer, to finish the update. This evidently happened instantaneously, because everything seemed to be working immediately when I tapped the switch. Side note: The charging port on these is a standard "USB mini-B" type, very common on cell phones, and the output of the supplied power cord is 5V/1A, so it should be easy to find a compatible A/C charger.Read more ›

UPDATE FREEZE

12/19/2011

Hey there, i, like many apparently, having this problem. i luckily found a gps site where someone posted a fix. and thank god it works.

temporarily turn off your anti virus and firewall. Then pull up your C drive, located in 'my computer'.

find this folder. it was located here for me: C:\Users\{your User name}\AppData\Local\Temp\ContentManager\update (u will have to type this in, cause it doesnt show up in the initial list.)

I opened that folder and went down the list till i found 'setup'.

Then run setup.exe from that folder. a grey magellan wizard box opened up. follow instructions from there.

Prior to starting the update, hold the power off button until the GPS screen goes black and then power up the unit while not attached to the computer's USB port.

Then start the update, it will find the unit and complete. When the unit is detached from the PC, it will finish the update process (it takes a few reboots).

update took about 30 seconds from pc.

here is site url just in case.

other than this happening i like this gps. i use it daily as i am a delivery driver.

Magellan uses a program called "Magellan Content Manager" to update software and maps. I have used it for my Magellan 1475Ts.

Content Manager could not "register" my 3120. I contacted support and got a canned reply, is it plugged in? Is your computer turned on? etc, etc. I said yes, yes, yes, please escalate.

Couple days later I got mail from a real person. He was knowledgeable, didn't treat me like an idiot, and he stuck with me to resolve all my issues.

He suggested I change the name of the 3120 in content manager. So instead of the default "Magellan Roadmate 3120" I changed it just "3120". The registration was successful! Go figure.

But then when I tried to download the software update, Content Manager failed, put up a lot of screwy messages, and bricked my GPS.

The guy at Magellan quickly explained how to unbrick my GPS (there are plenty of instructions how to do this on the Internet).

I asked him, how can I download updates in the future without bricking my GPS, and he acknowledged the problems in Content Manager and said they would most likely be resolved by the time another firmware update comes out and you know what, I believe they will.

It's not good that there were problems updating the GPS, definitely not good that the software bricked my GPS, but when a problem occurred Magellan support was responsive, respectful and effective. That to me makes all the difference and gives me confidence in the device.

The main reason I bought this GPS is because it does not have Traffic. My 1475T GPSs have ad-based traffic. In the years I have owned them, there has never been a single traffic incident reported. But I do get ads. I get ads even when I turn traffic completely off. So I bought the 3120 in order not to have to look at ads in exchange for a traffic feature that doesn't work.

This Magellan stays more lost than I do and that is saying a lot. I went on a trip to Orlando and on the way home she locked up in Pensacola and I couldn't get it to find me to help me get home. I ended up using MapQuest on my phone for directions home. I have a Magellan 1412 that is a wonderful unit. I am VERY disappointed in this unit. I have punched in addresses that I know how to get to, just to see if she can find it and she takes me 5 miles out of the way. It is a horrible unit. I wouldn't reccomend this to anyone.
