I bought the Magellan eXplorist 510 a few years ago. I compared it with my older Garmin gps basically to see which brand I liked better. The Magellan was more complicated to use than my Garmin. I still used the Magellan though but not alot. It was never abused or damaged. After a year of no use (with batteries removed), it won't pick up any satellites. Magellan customer service is no help. Forget calling and talking to a person. So I've emailed support. I received a reply that consisted of a series of questions and suggestions (I had already tried what they suggested before i contacted the company). I've sent two more replies answering their questions with no response from Magellan. So I essentially have an expensive paperweight. I'll NEVER buy another Magellan product EVER!

This works great for geocaching. Easy to load them onto the GPS and easy to find them. I am still getting used to all of the features, but I like that you can change the screen to 'North Up' or 'track up'. The touch screen leaves a little to be desired. I don't like how it always tries to add a 'pin' when I am trying to move the screen around. Maybe I'll try a stylus with it. Also had a little trouble with the card 'holder/slot'. Not the best design, but I got it to work. I also liked the camera function, though I often forget it has a camera. I like that it is waterproof and plan to do some kayak caching too. My husband plans to take it on his snowmobile trip this winter too.
Pros: Camera, waterproof, easy to use for geocaching.
Cons: I have to take the batteries completely out or they will go dead. Touch screen function could be better.

I've had mine a little over a year now, and I have been disappointed in the unit. For me, the major limitation is the speed (lack of) of the processor. It is very slow in getting a fix, and in showing your movement. My main use is in a 17' boat used for waterfowling. I was finally frustrated enough that it is now my backup until I can find a more updated handheld gps. I will continue to use my 2008 Lowrance Expedition as my primary gps, as it is so much quicker at acquiring signals and showing boat progress.

I bought this as our first GPS unit for geocaching, and while it has many features, getting to them is a pain. The touchscreen (the only way to control it) is best used with a very small finger, or in our case, a pencil eraser. The menu is not particularly intuitive. The size of the screen is great, but does not do well in bright sun. No better than a smart phone. It locks to satelites fairly quickly and the download of caches from a computer is quick. If I were to do it again, I would like real buttons for operation, but with a screen this size.

I am quite pleased with my new Magellan eXplorist 510. I have only had it a few days, but I have been all oer the unit. The first thing I noticed was how quickly it locked onto the satellites -- about 30 seconds right out of the box. The interface is very intuitive and easy to use. It was able to stay locked on while walking at a normal pace in a decently thick forest canopy. Also, the Vantage Point PC software is a must and it's free. I have already downloaded quite a bit of Digital Globe imagery for the areas I hunt. This is not an issue since the unit is equipped with expandable storage. I went from an old Eagle Explorer (which I loved) to a Garmin eTrex (which I hated), and I will never go back. Great unit for a decent price.

This GPS is pretty good overall. I like how long the lithium batteries last. What I don't like is that it's extremely difficult to see the screen in direct sunlight, even though I have the brightness at full max. Another reason it's hard to read in direct sunlight is because of my fingerprints on the touch screen. I'm constantly having to clean it in order to read it. Once I hold it at a certain angle, then I can just barely make out the screen. For the price I paid, though, I am happy with it. It's quite different from my DeLorme GPS. Each one has it's pros and cons.

I use this to go geocaching, it may seem like an overkill but I really do love it. The only thing that I don't like is that you have to download the geocaches to the machine, instead of just having them there. It is already downloaded with geocaches but to far away for me to use.

I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT "BUNDLE" DIDN'T MEAN THE NAVIONICS MARINE SOFTWARE WAS INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE. I WRITE THIS REVIEW SO OTHERS WON'T BE UPSET WITH THEIR PURCHASE. IF YOU WANT NAVIONICS YOU'LL HAVE TO BUY THE MAGELLAN EXPLORIST 510 "MARINE EDITION". ITS ABOUT $200.00 MORE THEN I PAID. I THOUGHT IS WAS A GREAT PRICE BUT I'VE BOUGHT THINGS IN THE PAST THAT WHERE A GREAT PRICE BECAUSE YOU PURCHASED "THE BUNDLE"
