The first chapter started a little slow for me, but once the action started picking up, I was thoroughly addicted to the story! Trust me, it is a laugh out loud, edge of your seat read. One thing this author has always provided for this reader is a happy heart while getting sucked into her thriller.
Now, if you are looking for romance and pages of steamy scenes, this series is not for you. However, if you love a good mystery set in the supernatural realm of world walkers, seers, elves, ghosts, and vampires then you have found the perfect series to invest in.
Maggie MacKay is one of those heroines that a reader can totally identify with. She is snarky, witty, and totally hilarious, yet has the mad skills to take down can even the toughest of vampires. With her steel toed boots, silver stake, and trusty side kick, Maggie continues to be a believable character, who always knows herself!
The sticky situations our lead character falls into are told in such a way that you laugh out loud and cheer her on. Multiple times my hunny gave me the "you're being weird look"as I cackled to myself while camped out on the couch with my kindle.
Killian is now her partner in the tracking business, and one has to love the interplay between the two. There is definitely some love interest there, but they always remain true to their partnership and continue to grow as a team. Plus, with all the action going on, who would have time for more than some fun flirting and witty banter?
Once the premise is set and the story gets going, it's like a snowball rolling down a hill....faster and more complicated it goes! Jumping from one time portal to the next, discovering there is way more to the story than the disappearance of the ship's ghostly inhabitants. The plot literally keeps thickening, with mind boggling space/time/dimensional bubbles ranging from modern day to the 1930's, our heroes find themselves at the center of a serious plot and merely surviving everything that is thrown their way.
I could keep this review going and going, but fear I would give to much away. Let's just say, this book is kick-awesome!
On a personal note, as someone who's attended both the "fake" and the "real" (at midnight) ghost tours on the Queen Mary (the obvious inspiration for the ship in the novel), while staying in the hotel for a conference, I really enjoyed the fanciful and imaginative stories she's come up with for that locale.
This book begins with a simple brunch with family and ends up throwing Maggie and Killian into a timey-wimey wibbly wobbly mess. These now official partners are the same sarcastic and wonderful pair that they’ve been for the previous books. Now that they’re working together, we get to see a bit more of the greedy side of Killian, which does not hurt my enjoyment of him at all. These two are quickly becoming my favorite couple, even if they continue to destroy my hopes and dreams by not hooking up (yet).
The mystery in this one has to do with vampires (tied to the big bad) showing up in times they aren’t supposed to while ghosts are notably missing where they are supposed to be. Throw in a ghost ship, some time paradoxes (paradoxi?) and you’ve got yourself an action-packed adventure for our fearless duo. Did I mention the amazing banter? This book is filled to the brim with fast-paced out of this world (literally) banter. I’m completely addicted.
