Maggie's Fall Paperback – May 8, 2012
From the Author
I did not write Maggie's Fall to be either gender or genre specific. It was important to me that Maggie appeal to all readers who love a good story. While there are romantic elements in Maggie, it is not a Romance; nor is it a Western, although I hope it evokes the spirit of the west.
About the Author
Ricki Wilson is an independent author and professional educator from Oklahoma. Growing up among genuine cowboys, Ricki learned at an early age to appreciate the true value of a good horse and a faithful dog. Maggie's Fall, Wilson's first novel, is a tribute to both.

Maggie's story moved me; I became attached to her and at times wished I was there to help. That is to say that this book is so well written that the characters are alive, you feel their presence and their emotions as you turn the pages. It is a book which I will go back to. I wish to read more about Maggie, is she happy? What happens to her now?
If like me, you like romance; but not the cheap/easy feelings/fairy tale romance, then you will love this book. If like me you like strong characters living real lives, then you will identify with them and love this book. If like me you love nature and the country, you certainly will love this book.
I definitely will buy Ricki Wilson next book without a moment of hesitation.
Essentially it is a tale of a woman who inherited a ranch from her parents but she runs more of a dude ranch of sorts during the summer. The ranch, named the M-, scrapes by year-to-year. Martha, her surrogate mother, who has taken care of her since she was a baby and the death of her folks in a car accident, is the housekeeper and makes meals that I can almost taste through the pages (LOL)! Her ten-year-old son, TJ, is sweet and lovable and resident accountant, Witt, sounds hunky to me. Unfortunately, Maggie has eyes for another. Although Maggie is quite capable handling things at the ranch, she can see that it's days are numbered. She's a single mother and even though Martha, along with Jonah the ranch hand, Witt and others serve as a family of sorts, Maggie seems to get in her own way and can't see the forest for the trees regarding getting her ranch on solid footing and seeing a good man right in front of her nose. That frustrated me at times but the story is sweet. The last third of the novel will have you wondering what will happen next more than once. The editing and grammar need some attention. But for that issue, I would have given Maggie's Fall a solid 4.
I love the entire cast of characters. Jonah and Martha, who help run the ranch and act as Maggie's extended family, are great people and I love Martha's no-nonsense way she deals with things. Maggie's son, T.J., adds his own brand of charm and, of course, I absolutely love Witt - the finance manager who helps Maggie at every opportunity he can.
My one criticism would be that there is quite a bit of head-hoping in this book with shifts from one character to the next which is sometimes a little confusing. On the other hand, it does give readers a chance to look into the minds of all these characters and get to know each of them better than they would have if Maggie were the only point of view character.
Even though this extended family face many challenges, together with love and perseverance, they show a strength to get through the tough times, even when things don't work out like they expect or want them too. A very satisfying story that I enjoyed and recommend. Can't wait for more from this author.
