It grabbed my heart and mind from the moment I started reading. I absolutely adored Vasilisa who was easy to relate to in so many ways. All she wanted was the best for her family and those around her, but she never thought she would be thrust into a situation that could place the kingdom of Beloch on her shoulders, especially in light of the return of a prince who has been a friend since childhood and whom she's thought about since he left to serve in the military.
And Adeline was just as relatable. Being the "Spare" princess meant never needing to worry about making decisions that might be important to the running of the realm of Cervene. When tragedy strikes, she finds strength in places she never knew she could look and from someone who has been caring for and protecting her all of her life.
Magic surrounds the kingdoms and magical creatures that have been the thing of legend are about to prove themselves real. But what will happen when the magic is called upon? Which kingdom will it answer to? And what will be the repercussions of the decisions made by each of the heroines involved.
The dual kingdom POV's was genius, and had me bouncing between supporting one to supporting the other. Both of the women are strong in different ways, which shines a completely different light on each of them. Just when I thought I knew who the good guys were, something would happen that threw a wrench into the works and have me completely perplexed. It was magical and mesmerizing, and I can honestly admit I have no idea which direction the story will take us and whether one kingdom will rise or fall.
This is a fantastic author team and brings a richness and power to the world they've built together. Their partnership is a melding of minds that has given us the beginnings of an enchanting and beguiling tale that has no bounds. Bravo, and I'm looking forward to the next part in this adventure!
Vasi and Adaline are two leads that we are just barely getting to know, and I have a feeling that the people we know right now, are going to be very different when this series comes to an end. They have some large shoes to fill, and thankfully have at least a few people around them that have their backs, because the amount of villains in this story is yet to be known, and it's definitely not a small number.
Wagner and Stradling have combined forces to create a vast story arc full of political intrigue, budding magic, mysterious characters, and villains you'll love to hate. This rich dark world is voiced from dual pov's that will collide in an explosive way. Buckle up for what's sure to be your new favorite fantasy ride.
