However, I do have two complaints. The first is that while the original 5 Planeswalkers have long, fleshed-out chapters, the three newer members have maybe 5 pages each and none of the supplemental text.
My second complaint is that, while a decent guide book, “The Rise of the Gatewatch” is a poor art book. The book itself is small, and much of the art is tiled so two or three images can be set on a page. I would have happily paid more to get a larger book that could showcase the sketches and paintings more effectively.
I recommend this book to other lore lovers, or those who are curious about how Planeswalker cards were first created and designed, but for art lovers, I suggest looking into the many Plane-specific books on the market instead
The art is beautiful and the overall book looks very nice. The foreword also gives us a little view into the creative origins of planeswalkers. If you collect the series of MtG art books, you will see a lot of the same art but also some new pieces too.
I was a little surprised by how physically small the book was! It's slightly bigger than something I would call a "pocket guide", but much smaller than the aforementioned MtG art books. This isn't a big issue, just a surprise for me when I opened the package. The dimensions of the book are listed in the description, so it's on me for not looking at that before purchase. I included pics of the book next to a Planeswalker deck box and next to a booster pack of cards for visual reference.
That all said, I'm very happy with this guide and hope that we see more of this kind of stuff released from Wizards of the Coast in the future!
That is the best that can be said... the pictures are pretty...
Not at all what I anticipated or hoped for.
Would not have purchased in the store if I had been able to preview it before buying.

Sadly, I consider this book covers neither the history of the art (artistic development decisions, how character and plot developments were reflected in the art etc) nor of the characters (plot summaries, their motivation, impact on mtg lore etc). Unless you are a dedicated collector determined to buy every mtg-related book, I would not recommend buying it as there is nothing left after flicking through it for less than 5 minutes and you will see mainly art that is viewable for free on the MTG card database.
Ich frage mich wirklich, was Wizards damit will.
