The Magic Hour Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

A fast-paced, time-twisting middle grade adventure where EVERY SECOND COUNTS.

Ailsa Craig is always late! To everything – her own birth, school, and even her own house exploding! Although it is certainly better to be late for that than early…

Then one day, Ailsa discovers the secret of a lifetime: there are in fact twenty five hours in a day. The extra hour, the “Magic Hour”, exists in a fantastical, parallel Edinburgh, accessed at twilight. As she explores this extraordinary place where anything seems possible, Ailsa can’t believe her luck. Her grades improve and life seems to be on the up – her parents are thrilled and even the popular kids start liking her.

But messing with time, can have desperate consequences. When Ailsa discovers to her horror that the extra time comes at a terrible cost, she must battle the sinister forces at work and save herself, her parents and the world.

  • A funny, high-octane, race-against-time adventure that is perfect for fans of Pages & Co, The Beast and the Bethany and P.G. Bell.
  • Beautifully illustrated and brought to life.

Hello everyone, and thanks for stopping by.

My name is David Wolstencroft. I'm the author of two thrillers, GOOD NEWS BAD NEWS, and CONTACT ZERO. Both of these are published in the US by Dutton.

I am also creator of the BAFTA-winning spy series MI-5 ("Spooks" in the UK and Australia)

This is just a stub for the moment as I'm thrilled that the kindly souls at amazon are offering this service to authors. It really does help to know that there is a throughline to readers.

Thanks again, and keep checking in. I promise there will be exciting news about Good News Bad News, Contact Zero, MI-5 and more!

In the meantime, check out my website (soon to be overhauled) at:

5.0 out of 5 stars What would you do with an extra hour every day?

What would you do with an extra hour every day? Well I'm a middle aged adult, doing too much, so I'd probably sleep. Our protagonist Ailsa Craig however, is made of sterner stuff so she goes off on a series of adventures - which is all great fun but dark secrets are revealed...

A fun but thought provoking read, and very enjoyable

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story

I ordered this for my 11 year old son as he loves to read and this is his review of the story in his words.

Great story kept me entertained throughout, the storyline centres around a girl that's always late to everything and she finds a special place where the day has an extra hour, she brings her friends there so they can enjoy the extra time together, but there is a twist to the story.
I enjoyed reading it and think others would enjoy it as well.

Pricewise this is currently listed at £6.49 (there is a kindle version available for £6.17) which I think is quite reasonable.
Overall my son was very happy with the book and would happily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of 11 year old Alisa, always late, who finds a portal to a parallel Edinburgh with an extra hour every day.
Couldn’t we all do with that.
But there are consequences in messing with time. Alisa has quite the battle on her hands to save the world.
I enjoyed getting to know Grandma Judith and I giggled at the authors notes at the bottom of many of the pages, some of which are also educational such as noting the Pinwheel Galaxy in Ursa Major which is very spirally indeed. These notes give children the idea to look outside the actual book and investigate further should they wish.

Magical marvellousness!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story for kids up to age 100

A really nicely written book that takes you along for the adventure.
The writing is done in a way were it's almost like the book itself is talking to you, at the very least a narrator.
The footnotes got a little bit of overuse for my liking, but they add to the humour too.

A great, fun , humour laden story.
Kids will love it. It's also great to read with/to your kids ,or just to read yourself.

I look forward to more adventures.
