Jack Cardiff tells the story of his life in films, first as a cameraman and then as a director. He was one of the first to use the Technicolor film camera, and the book provides a record of how colour cinematography developed in Britain. He also provides a humorous account of his days on the music-hall circuit during the 1920s and '30s, and anecdotes about his experiences photographing actresses such as Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe.

WONDERFUL BOOK! One of the best autobiogs I've ever read. Totally intriguing and fascinating. I'd highly recommend this one - fast moving, well paced, many many never told before details about working with the stars & directors. I loved this book.

Jack Cardiff's little jewel of a book is well worth reading if you care about how films are created; his loving, detailed reminiscences are genuinely instructive and rich. You will also like him very much -- as a craftsman, he has few peers. Cardiff shares the experience of seeing as a way of life and thoughtfully examines how it shapes artistic expression. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 「
Reviewed in Japan on January 28, 2013

Wingate
4.0 out of 5 stars An excellant autobiography with one reservation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 17, 2012
Cardiff was one of the greatest cinematographers of his era.He worked with many of the most influential directors and greatest stars.Apart from many fascinating anecdotes he lets us in on many of the tricks of his trade. It is difficult to realise when watching some of his early technicolour films that the film speed of the stock was ASA 12 compared to ASA200 of modern 35mm still camera film.He actually had to run the film through the camera twice to obtain any sort of exposure in St Peters Rome. The only chapter i disliked was that which extolled the virtues of bullfighting and bullfighters. It is a cruel vicious enterprise which has no place in this otherwise flawless book.
