Magic Kingdom for Sale - Sold!: Landover, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,665 ratings

Here in his first non-Shannara novel, Terry Brooks has written a gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure - sure to delight fantasy listeners everywhere.

Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.

The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.

Ben's only followers were the incompetent court magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as court scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.

To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective kings of Landover to duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win.

The task of proving his right to be king seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn....

apparently women weren't very interesting in the '80s.
i just finished terry brooks' 'magic kingdom for sale -- sold!' it's a solid fantasy novel and a fun read. although: i realized after i'd finished it that of the dozen or so main characters, only two are woman: one an evil witch and the other a beautiful fairy creature that keeps telling the main character she belongs to him. so it might be a touch less entertaining if you identify as female.

Awesome book to read. Great adventure.

although my first impressions of Terry Brooks was "Sword of Shanara" I saw a book in my uncle's house and became interested. The Magic Kingdom series(starting with this one "For Sale Sold") was the one I truly read from start to finish(ending with Princess of Landover). I have read the first leg of the journey three times over about three decades, the second trilogy, Starting with "Tangle Box" and Witcehs Brew I read more recently and Princess of Landover I read the entire book the day it was released to public on hard back and enjoyed it thourghly. however it was dealing this the daughter of the protagonist, not Ben Holiday. The first trilogy is most interesting as it deals primarily with the struggle to kingship by Ben Holiday and trials dealing with it when he does obtain his throne and his power over Landover. This first book deals with the Quest to become a king, my favorite of all the books. Black Unicorn deals with loosing what he had, but a delusion, and Wizard at Large is a mishap, not as interesting but good read. this is the first of the Landover series and was released to us in 1986 the second is equally as good, the others, were good but these first(IMO) were the best. although Tangle Tales was also very intriguing. and Witches Brew the aftermath preachy at times, but still fun. Princess of Landover ties directly to Witches brew. The entire series is very tight with continuity as most of Terry Brooks's books. This deals with consistent characters giving you the same feeling as chumming with old friends. The Shanara series does not. it deals with hundreds even thousands of year spans between books. no characters last that long. I prefer Landover but recommend also any Shanara ttile! beginning with Armageddon if you are bored with backstories I'd recommend Sword of Shanara first. for Landover read this first! A must!

I read the Magic Kingdom series when they first came out. Thought they were really great. So, when I saw the first book in the series - "Magic Kingdom for Sale - Sold!" being offered for free in the Kindle version, I immediately grabbed it.

I started reading it but have found a lot of formatting errors that are a bit annoying. For some reason, in many instances, the exclamation point (!) is inserted upside down. How could that happen? Other instances are words that are hyphenated in the middle of a sentence, as if the word was originally at the end of a row and was supposed to continue to the next one.

There were a few other words that were missing. I had to laugh when the beginning of a sentence started out "FU" and that was it.

I've read many books on the Kindle so far, even Brooks' first Shannara Trilogy and didn't notice any formatting errors. So, I guess the whole reason for releasing this book as a freebie was due to the poor formatting. I'm at the beginning where Ben just made the purchase and he's driving to the entry point of the Kingdom and all these errors are annoying to see.

Is there a way to report the formatting problems to the publisher? I can give them examples but I don't want to spend time listing every single one, all they have to do is read the kindle version and the mistakes just jump out at you. Obviously the Kindle version wasn't proofread.

I may purchase the next one in the series in Kindle format but if it contains just as many errors, I won't buy the rest.

To summarize: Great story, lousy kindle formatting! I would give it 5 stars but it loses 1 because of the formatting errors.

Good price and good delivery timing. This was purchased for someone else. I knew it was an exceptional book (detailed and intricate) as well as being well written. If the person likes the book, I'll pick up the other half a dozen books of this series.

Having Only Read Terry’s “The Sword of Shannara” which I really like. I picked this book randomly from my fantasy stash. What a Brilliant, piece of Fantastic Fiction. This Book has everything you need, I don’t want to Spoil the story!
An absolutely exciting novel
that at times is very emotional, dealing with loss, finding strength within and believing in yourself. Demons, an Evil Witch, Fairies, plus a Dragon amongst other characters.
I cannot give this book enough praise. I have found this is an extremely moving and a definite page turner. The Escapism of this well woven Story was tremendous, it made me feel happy even when I truly felt otherwise. I read it at any opportunity. Thank You Mr. Terry Brooks for giving me something so special and inspiring. I know this IS Fiction but there are a lot of real life experiences that most of us will go through; no matter how hard or terrifying life can be, believe in yourself and those you love, together you can overcome anything. That’s what message, I got. It will be different for everyone. 5***** can’t wait to read “ Black Unicorn “ soon
