About the Author

Rada Bukhman started her musical career at age nine, performing with Omsk Symphony, one of the major Russian symphony orchestras. She earned her musical education in Moscow and Jerusalem, studying with two generations of prominent musicians belonging to the famed Russian Piano School. Rada is a renowned piano teacher and music educator running her piano studio in Richmond, British Columbia. Her highly professional skills and personal dedication to teaching have been a great inspiration for many young musicians. Rada Bukhman has authored multiple publications on the themes of music and musical education. Her landmark book, “Discovering Color behind the Keys: The Essence of the Russian School of Piano-Playing“ has received high acclaim from piano teachers around the world.

In all – an excellent book

I am a big fan of the previous book of this author, so it did not take me much time and thought to order this new one as soon as I saw it at Amazon. However, I could not imagine what kind of unexpected gift I am getting. This is a totally different book compared to the first one. The previous book “Discovering Color behind the Keys” is written in a highly professional language and discusses multiple technical aspects of piano playing. “The Magic Link” to the contrary is written in a way both professionals and young students involved with piano study can easily enjoy. That does not come at expense of depth of thought and thoroughness of the music explanation, which I found the most amazing. “The Magic Link” goes from Schumann’s to Tchaikovsky pieces showing the relations between them and also interjects the pieces and themes from earlier masters. All that is presented in a playful and easy-to-understand manner of a free flowing conversation. It does contain music of full Tchaikovsky Children’s Album and 18 beautiful pieces from Schumann’s Album for the Young. I was just a bit disappointed at first that I did not see the Index of Music below the regular Table of Content, but sure enough it does appear in the end of the book. Index of illustration is also available there. The illustrations are great – humorous at times but indeed reflecting the music. I was almost knocked out of the chair when read the names of the artists – but I will not disclose the secret and leave it for those, who will open the book by themselves. In all – an excellent book. I recommend it to everyone – professionals in music and not so professionals too, whoever has any kind of connections to piano playing, piano studying or teaching or simply interested in music.

A treasured collection with great teaching value!

I've blogged off the roof about this album that sensitively partners pieces of Schumann and Tchaikovsky from their respective children's albums. These are not embryonic compositions, but well formed works framed with fine art produced by young students and the author. I was so taken by the music within, that I've been recording and posting a new Tchaikovsky tableau each day. I urge students and teachers, alike, to partake of this treasure.

Fantastic Music, Great Information, and Great Music!

This is a fantastic book for any piano teacher or student interested in the music of Schumann and/or Tchaikovsky. The book is full of wonderful illustrations that spark the imagination. The book has great information and lots of interesting tidbits to add life and a fresh perspective to some familiar pieces (and some unfamiliar ones as well). The ordering of pieces is logical and Bukhman is a genius in the way she links pieces together of these great two composers. Refreshing and fun!

This book has inspired me to do a story-recital highlighting the works of Schumann and Tchaikovsky as well as some other greats. FIVE STARS!
