I keep it in our garage (on top of our clothes dryer) so we don’t have to listen to it run, however it’s not so loud that I wouldn’t be able to tolerate it running inside our home. Not at all.
I’ve not yet made any meat products with it though I inend to in the future. It’s not a large capacity model really ... IMHO, but for a small family it’s a nice size. I use it weekly at the very least and almost daily at times.
I’ve made all kinds of dried fruit and some dried spices. I’ve even used it to bring sodium silicate packages that I’ve used in pantry jars to keep my cooking dry goods fresh back to life.
I was drawn to this model as it’s BPA free and after its initial run to break it in I’ve not noticed anything but pleasant smells coming from this machine, and I have a very sensitive sense of smell.
I’ve saved so much produce that was getting “tired” that would otherwise have gone into the compost and made it into super delicious nutritious economical snacks.
I encourage you to be creative with the fruit / vegetables / meats you dry. I put all kinds of spices on mine before drying them and it turns them into something really special when finished. Something as simple as adding cinnamon and cardamom to thinly sliced apples for example makes a delightfully addictive snack. 😊
The booklet that comes with the dehydrator has been helpful to me and it’s really a simple easy thing to operate. Fruits and vegetables vary widely by batch according to the thickness of the slice, natural variations in the pieces of produce etc. I do rotate the racks around in the order in which they’re stacked (during the drying process) to change up the air flow and make sure everything is drying evenly. It doesn’t require a lot of monitoring and I’ve found it’s quite forgiving as far a the amount of time needed for any particular item to be adequately dehydrated. Personal preference plays a large part here too.
I do use sodium silicate packs as I mentioned in a storage jars along with items I’ve dried if it’s something I really want to stay crisp ... Spiced banana slices for example. I like them to remain crispy; otherwise they stick in my teeth and I find it unpleasant. 😕
I didn’t expect to dry herbs in this but I have and it does a wonderful job. I’m just really pleased with the simplicity and ease of use of this machine and I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a smaller capacity model for home use. Now that I have it, I can’t imagine managing my kitchen without it. It’s made that big of a difference in our diets and the saving of food that’s aging faster than we consume them.
I’m very happy I decided to purchase this model. It’s not such a gigantic investment and I like the ease of being able to regulate the size of the dehydrator simply by selecting the number of racks I fill. I’d recommend purchasing a larger capacity model if you need to produce pounds and pounds of dried goods, but for a small family I think it’s just ideal.
UPDATE: it's been over two years since I purchases this and noticed that it did take longer than I expected to dehydrate. After a little research on dehydrate veggies, I learned that blanching the potatoes for about 2 minutes helps the dehydration process. I also made fruit ups. Lemme tell you they were delicious, but as an inexperienced user I made them too thick because I made too much of the fruit.
So a word of advice It's better to look at recipes before attempting to make anything if you're not familiar with dehydrating.
Unfortunately the lid was cracked during a recent move, and I could not find the replacement part anywhere. Nor did I receive a response from the manufacturer after looking into it.
A great basic unit, perfect for just getting started if you aren't too serious about dehydrating things. It does the job.
