I cannot tell you enough how much I felt as I read this book. How absorbed I was by each word, each sentence, each moment that went by. I met new characters and grew closer to old ones and perhaps that is why the book affected me so much. Because I have grown fond of Kate. I know many individuals find book boyfriends to swoon over and root for and Curran very much so is a book boyfriend of mine but Kate, no one is better than Kate. No character exists that I ever loved as much as I love her, like that best friend or sister that you couldn’t imagine not having in your life and watching her feel pain and sorrow hurt because I know her and felt her pain too.
This is one of the strangest reviews I have ever written because I’m not going to tell you that the hook is great or that the ending is unexpected and exciting or that the romance is so sweet and pure. I’m not going to go on about Andrew’s style of writing or perfection in this, that, or the other because what mattered to me in regards to this book is that I felt something and it affected me. That is why I love this book, why I would recommend that YOU should read it and why Ilona Andrews has and always will be an all time favorite author of mine.
Each time I read one of these Kate Daniels books it seems it is always "this is the best one yet" but I guess it is true, they just keep getting better and they improve on a story I thought could not be improved upon, guess that is why I write reviews and not novels.
This is such a myriad and multilayered story I cannot begin to cover the scope in this review and since I don't do spoilers, here goes.
The crux of the motivation for the whole story is the fact that many of the Pack children have to be killed because they basically go feral around puberty. A young girl that Kate knows and is very fond of is in this condition and so when they get a chance to get a supply of what amounts to an antidote they ignore the probability that it is a trap and take the journey. The fact that Saiman is part of this elite group should make most of the fans of this series perk up a bit since I know I have wanted to see more of him.
We see the bond between Curran and Kate tested a bit when an attractive were Princess turns up and wants Kate's title as Consort which means we get a lot more of the depth of their relationship which is what separates this series from many others since they only exist for each other.
The short version is that there are three were packs that are fighting over the birth of a pair of twins. The order of the birth will determine the control of a strategic piece of real estate in Europe but the real fact is that there is more to it than that (as always) and Kate is at the center of it.
There IS an epic battle scene that was so hard fought it made me tired just reading it, must be great writing to do that IMHO.
Cannot tell you a lot more without ruining the plot but be aware, this is not a happy novel in total, there is some tragedy and the ending is bittersweet at best.
Bottom Line: This is beyond 5 Stars and this pair of writers just continues to amaze me with the imagination and writing skills that have given us some of the best novels in this genre for several years now. The plot is intricate and you will not get bored but in case anyone is wondering, the romance between Curran and Kate is the heart of these novels now but they are always Urban Fantasy which means a lot of action and fighting but that is why most of us love Kate, she is still human and since I am a total "revenge junkie" I see good times ahead for me .
