I've been a fan of this band since their first album came out when I was in 6th grade. All these years later I have outgrown the band's sound but I still pick up every new album they put out because their first 3 albums meant so much to me growing up.

I've got to say, this album really is more of the same. There's not much here we haven't heard in the last two albums. It's another attempt to recapture the preteen market the band controlled so well a decade ago with "I'm a Believer". This album has a similar feel to "Summer Girl" and "Get the Picture?". It's bubblegum pop with keyboards and surf rock influences mostly laced with lyrics about sunny days and crushes on girls.

The album is littered with stinkers like "Live to Love Another Day", "Future Ex Wife" and the snooze worthy "Better with Time". The hooks in these songs just don't work and the lyrics are sub-par at best.

The song "Magic" feels forced. It's cramped with too many words and an odd rap section from J. Dash. There's just too much going on. The whoa-ohs are oddly placed and the whole song feels cramped.

The cover "Don't You (forget about me)" falls flat. The song has been covered numerous times by other artists and Smash Mouth didn't add anything particularly new or different to the track. The bands prior covers like "I'm a Believer" and "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" worked because Smash Mouth added new life, power and energy to the song. "Don't You" lacks the energy and that special "Smash Mouth touch" of their previous covers and Harwell's voice just isn't a good fit for it.

However, there are some tracks to like here. The ballad "Out of Love" is easily their best ballad since "Out of Sight" on their 2001 selftitled album.

it's been a long 6 years waiting for more smash mouth, thought it would never come, but now its out and it flows great with all 5 of there past albums, here's a run down of all the tracks

1. Perfect Planet
very strong opening song, fun, fast and poppy

2. Live To Love Another Day
closest song to fush/astro days with a very 60's mod sound, could hear this in a kids spy/detective movie

3. Magic (featuring J. Dash)
amazing fun song, very poppy and dancey and i love the j-dash bridge. this song needs to be played on the radio alot more and be on movies

4. Justin Bieber
very fun poppy song complete with woah oh's, could see this on the radio and movies, lyrics might be a bit controversial to the teeny boppers

5. Out Of Love
slow sexy jam, has a new vibe that i really havent heard from smash mouth, very ballad like and i love the way steve sounds in the pre chorus "go on and be strong" that part

6. Flippin' Out (featuring J. Dash)
shrek 5 theme song, great for radio, movies sounds like all star/holiday in my head and some of there other jumpy songs, and j-dash does an awesome job in the bridge again

7. Future X Wife
awesome song, onw of my favorite songs on the cd, awesome verses and chorus this song just makes me happy, think this song could do great on the radio

8. Better With Time
another slow jam, relaxing with a very lifting chorus, has some really good vocals from steve very awesome song

9. The Game
very fun song love the woah oh's, the chorus sounds very countryish probably cause steve dabbled in country for a bit

10.

This disc just gets better with each listen. Great songs and production with everything I like about Smash Mouth and more. I love the hooks and full pop/rock sound but once again the lyrics have surprised me, very good intelligent stuff. I'm feeling you Steve!

One of the few cd's out there actually worth the money.

And many thanks to Amazon.com for supporting this band!

It is immediately clear in the opening seconds of the lead track, "Perfect Planet," that Smash Mouth has not lost the ability to craft the perfect little slice of sunny power pop, the upbeat anthem is a great opener. "Live to Love Another Day" recalls a previous hit, "Walkin on the Sun," while the album's lead single "Magic" comes off as a more mellow, more melodic ode to their pop-punk past.

Steve Harwell is in fine voice, but in some of the songs, his voice is turned down in the mix. The only time the band stumbles a bit is on the slow ballad "Out Of Love" which is a good song, but perhaps ill suited for this type of band. Also, the cover version of "Don't You Forget About Me" is pretty much by the books; it's a decent cover, but the band could probably injected more life into it.

"Future X Wife" and "Flippin Out" are perfect three minute pop songs that sound as if they were recorded during the band's prime, and the midtempo track "She's Into Me" has a chorus that is as sugary sweet as the girl described in the song.

Overall, this is a really nice comeback, as it finds the band doing what it does best and not chasing trends. Harwell's honesty and occasional sarcasm shine through and give the record a little twist; these are good songs but Harwell makes them better, as he has a good handle on the material and the perfect blend of attitude and pop sensitivity to pull it off. 4.5 stars.
