About the Author
“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

This story centers around Derek's investigation into the murder of a human family with ties to Kate and Curran. He takes it personally when someone murders children. Julie gets pulled into the investigation when the case she is working ends up tied to his.
The hunt for the man responsible ends up fraught with danger and full of action. That's cool, of course, but that's not what makes the story so awesome. This is all about the characters, who we are seeing without the filter of Kate's perspective. We learn things about them Kate doesn't know. We even see things that, perhaps, they don't even realize about themselves. Like Derek's steadfast determination to see Julie as a child. Like the fine line he walks between control and loup.
Or the big honking secret Julie is keeping from everybody.
Yes, I'll admit that I am one of those people who hope for a Derek - Julie pairing one day. But we aren't close to that yet. But we are close to Julie's secret exploding with some major repercussions. And I can't wait to see it. Now buy this immediately. Worth every penny.
Short stories are some of the hardest things to write, yet "Team Ilona Andrews" nails it again. The characters are complex and well developed plus the plot was excellently devised. It stayed on target and it was paced out wonderfully, fast and slower at exactly the right times. All three of these traits put together make a very good short story. (Or Novella)
I can picture Derek and Julie out fighting the bad guys, but for them to have this on going quasi relationship is hard to reconcile. I think of Derek as Derek. He's Curran's & Kate's wolf. Intensely loyal to a fault. If anything I had him pegged as the "big brother" more than companion. Julie has mostly been away at school and she's fiercely independent through her time spent of the streets before Kate became her Guardian. Even more than independent I get the "Alpha" vibe from her, same as I do with Derek. Thus why it never occurred to me they would form a solid bond like they have, even if Derek doesn't really want to admit it due to her age and parents. But, the more I think about it, the more I like it. Now I'm curious as to how it's all going to work out over the next several years in Derek & Julie's lives. Guess I'll just have to buy the next book and find out! 😁
So, its not in your face but seriously these 2 have it for each other! Its been really subtle in the Kate series and even then your not sure if its a sister/brother thing or more? This confirmed that they have feelings. Neither one is admitting in a big way but you know. I knew Julie did from the moment she met Derek in Magic Burns she had a little crush. Julie is 16 is now and Derek is 20. So, he's keeping his distance and doesnt want to even think of her as anything more. At least on the surface but I think his wolf knows. Derek the human wont even fathom anything. Nope he's not touching those thoughts. Julie is keeping her distance with him too. She doesnt want him to know either. Its her secret. So, on some level she knows she's not ready and she's young. Doesnt stop her from loving him because she does, oh how she loves him. I hope they do more. I know Kate Daniels is ending in the next book next year but I hope its NOT the end for some characters.
I enjoyed this short immensely and I think Gordon and Ilona did an awesome job giving their fans this little snippit. We needed it! :)
