After the success of the boy-targeted Mega Mash-Ups series, a girl-oriented counterpart was inevitable. This first entry in the Magical Mix-Ups series offers up fairies, friendly witches, frogs, and fancy weddings, while readers get the opportunity to finish illustrations that have been left artfully incomplete (though obviously this limits library use). Sprinkled across the pages are such suggestions as “give Sapphire a lovely hairstyle and a tiara” and “more sound effects, please!” There are also questions like “is Emerald looking bored or fascinated?” which appears next to the young witch’s mostly blank face. The story here is easy to read, if pretty slight, but no less silly or forgettable than the popular Mega Mash-Ups tales. Still, the format will appeal to drawers, doodlers, and kids who like to contribute their own ideas to a book. Grades 2-4. --Abby Nolan
This interactive chapter book, first in the Magical Mix-Ups series, takes place in the world of "Mixtopia," where doe-eyed fairies, princesses, witches, and more live (mostly) in harmony. . . .Edwards and Hodgkinson provide just the right amount of narrative, allowing readers to confidently take the unicorn-drawn carriage reins.
