Robert E. Gelinas has crafted a fine and thought-provoking fantasy in our real-world setting. With a new twist on the concept of "mad scientist," he plunges Dr. William Turner (think Liam Neeson with superpowers) into the role of a condemned man on a mission. In another twist, Gelinas puts the female lead in the position of power to solve the mysteries surrounding her father--and herself--if she can--in time--against a modern-day cult that would prefer to stay in its position of power.
The author has prepared a well-thought-out and cleverly developed magical scavenger hunt mixed with who-else-dunnit mystery through both a guide to the supernatural and a bullet through action/adventure/sorcery-in-motion. The reader doesn't get to tire out from the action-packed portions because a "slow down and digest what's happening" section proceeds the next whirlwind through a portion of the world. "Faces in the Stones" is a well-rounded race to the end.
