The lead character, Danica, is a cop from one of the ten chief families on an Earth that has had nuclear war, a demon invasion, vampires- yet still manages to be familiar.
The characters are interesting, the story engaging. While it’s not left on a cliffhanger, it is definitely left with a sense that the sequel is going to be incredible.
Mostly romance free not because the main character is anti romance, but just because it’s definitely not the time and place.
There are some significant errors that crop up. (See ‘Spoilers’ for details). There was also a lack of development or definition in the main character. She was doing *everything* at breakneck speed.
I believe I will try the next book. Even as glib as everything was, I still enjoyed reading the book.
At one point the MC mentioned getting revenge for the death of her father. It was confusing, as she also mentioned she didn’t believe he was dead and there was no other mention of Benyiro Family as the cause of his death. Completely out of the blue.
There were also issues with geography. Specifically, if you state that the oceans rose (due to climate change) then that also means that peninsulas and estuaries are now in different places. And waterside restaurants would be newer as the old ones flooded. You cannot simultaneously change *and* not change the world.
Finally, the MC has a flying car (!!!), yet her Family doesn’t have a jet the can do very short takeoffs/landings. It seemed like a huge weakness and over sight. She even left the car behind on a building helipad!! The flying car just didn’t fit in the world very well.
Her cases range from monsters in an alley killing people, to a drug house massacre with demons, enslaved kids, and vampires. Then it gets ugly. She searching for a missing teen and gets too close to something else. And the people are serious about her stopping-they start trying to take her out. Now, I'm not trying the whole story, for that you buy the book. Stellar writing, but when it's BR Kingsolver, I'll jump genres and give it a try.
I can't think of any negatives off the top of my head. Nope, drawing a blank. If you like fun and clever urban fantasy, you'll probably like this one.
Liked her interaction with her boss, roommate and her ‘family’.
Hoping this will be a series and a next book will be out soon.

I'm really enjoying the Rosie's o'grady paranormal bar & grill so thought I'd give this a try. It's great to have a detective story mixed in with magic but from an original story foundation
An engaging MC and a fast paced storyline. Thanks Bruce!
