Great music from Mike. However, this 2-fer sounds absolutely horrible. It's tinny, metallic, highly compressed, awfully loud, and just plain hurts my ears. Moreover, on some songs, like "Joanne," tape hiss is palpable. A really, REALLY bad remastering job, if indeed it was remastered at all (no remastering credits are found in the booklet or anywhere else). The other 2-fers in this series sound great and are an upgrade from earlier versions, but this one is a sonic abomination. If you want better sound for these titles, pick up a copy of the 2 CD "First National Band - Complete" from Mike Nesmith's Videoranch site.

After buying himself out of his Monkees contract in late 1969, and bankrupting himself in the process, Michael Nesmith formed The First National Band and signed with RCA Victor, the same label that distributed The Monkees' Colgems imprint. The first two FNB albums, MAGNETIC SOUTH and LOOSE SALUTE, both released in 1970, have been combined on one magnificent "two-fer" CD by BMG's (Sony hadn't yet bought them out) Camden Deluxe label (a boutique imprint, as opposed to the old budget-line RCA Camden label in the U.S.)
These two albums represent early '70s country-rock at its finest. The hits "Joanne" (about a cow, folks, not a girl) and "Silver Moon" are here, along with several remakes from the Monkee days ("Calico Girlfriend," "Nine Times Blue," "Hollywood," "The Crippled Lion," "Conversations" (a.k.a. "Carlisle Wheeling"), and "Listen to the Band," which was the tenth Monkees single). The Monkees' original versions can be found on the MISSING LINKS series, or on other reissues. There is also a brief instrumental called "First National Rag," a lovely version of the old standard "Beyond the Blue Horizon" (marred by intrusive sound effects), Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces," and several others, including an unreleased bonus track called "First National Dance."
All three "two-fers" in this series are worth having, but this is probably Nes' best solo work (with the possible exception of 1992's Tropical Campfires ). The sound quality is magnificent, far outshining Nesmith's domestic Videoranch release, Complete First National Band Recordings . Definitely a must-have.

I thought this would be better, it has a lot of his recordings but the dubbing leaves a lot to be desired. You have to change the volume on almost every song because the volume of the CD is inconsistent. Still it does have most of his songs on it. I would try a different anthology.

As you may know if you read my reviews,I dont talk much about the music and the style of music. Thats your taste and perception.
I dig into the remastering and the technical side of things like source material and handling of the master.
This set consists of 2 albums poorly remastered from god knows what source.
The first album, "the blue one", really suffers here with an amature noise reduction disaster complete with whistling artifacts.
The original album sounded bad on the post dynagroove pre dynaflex thick orange label RCA vinyl.
It was a bad master. Dont make it worse.
What was the Quad 8 track made from. Perhaps it was better.
CD companies rarely do any homework or research when putting together a package.
Steve Hoffman is an example of a person who cares and does a stellar job!!! I wish he was consulted on this project.
The new pictures are nice but the CD is an audio product.
This is forgotten time and again.
Maybe there is a better CD out there. There are more to choose from.
This one is ok if you dont care that much about audio quality. ie mp3

If you have a chance to read more about Nez and Red Rhodes it’s worthwhile to take the time. This is just excellent pop/country/western/Nesmith music. Nesmith was very progressive and maintained high standards with a sense of humor. The collaborative work with Red Rhodes makes Nesmith’s catalog superb within its genre. This would be the place to start.
(Check out LA Turn Around with Burt Jansch. Jansch is completely different, but with these same two musicians, and Nesmith’s good taste, the pairing is a singular experience.)

These first two albums that Papa Nez released after his departure from the Monkees in 1970 are wonderful examples of his musical genius. Tracks like Joanne, Hollywood, I Fall to Pieces (a great cover of the Patsy Cline classic), Listen to the Band (a reworking of the Monkees great from '68), and the triptych wonder that is Calico Girlfriend/Nine Times Blue/Little Red Rider will have you hitting the repeat button and singing along in no time. Great stuff for sure!

Beyond some things technical, there are no "monkees" in this CD. Michael Nesmith has a clarity in his vocal expression that conveys more than the notes. The lyrics of a song like Joanne are clever and refreshing. They require a little bit of introspection but not at the expense of the intended meaning. His band takes an old Jeanette MacDonald song from the 1930's "Beyond the Blue Horizon" and it is fashioned into a lively, contemporary sentiment. The well-orchestrated musical backup carries the album throughout every song. Eclectic, fun, entertaining CD.

A lot of people don't realize that Michael Nesmith wrote Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Pony Band. His mother invented White out. He was one of the first to work with video's with his video "Elephant Parts". A VERY accomplished musician before The Monkees.

Unique, beautiful and unlike anything else that bears the tag ‘Country’
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2013Verified Purchase
Magnetic South is an extraordinary piece of work. Although Nesmith is rightly credited as one of the pioneers of country rock, he took a very different path to the other artists, like Gram Parsons (of the Flying Burrito Bros), who have been more lauded and loved by music journalists. Their take on modern country was the more traditional mix of wild drinking, women and ego. Their sound and words were really a post-hippy slant on the genre. Nesmith’s lyrics did not involve the traditional themes at all and his sound is quite unique — in fact all Nesmith’s work sounds only like Nesmith. The songs and the musical landscape are quite beautiful, almost a pure expression of decent values and heartfelt thoughts. The contribution of pedal steel player O.J. Red Rhodes (who played on all of Nesmith’s first 8 solo albums) cannot be understated. This is country music as you’ve never heard it, and it could be argued this isn’t country music at all. Indeed, Nesmith has often argued that he wasn’t producing country music at all — although he can often contradict himself. No, this is Nesmith music, and when you have a Texas voice, employ a steel gulitar — and do the odd Jimmy Rogers song with some yodelling, its easy to get confused. But this is simply Nesmith bending the genre to suit his work, which has as much of a latin feel as it does country. If you like trad country and themes of bar fights, infidelity and male ego this isn’t for you. If you want to hear gorgeous love songs, sublime singing and a unique soundscape give it a try.

I loved Mike Nesmith in The Monkeys. But I only wanted this for the song Listen to the band. Sadly it wasn't the single version so had to buy a greatest hits of the Monkeys for the version I wanted. It's a good album and although I'm not a country fan. It's a sort of heavy rock country. I wouldn't play it all the time but now and again it's fine
