Inspired writing and play. Place it along side of Amina Figarova's work.
First heard it on XM's Blue Note Hour. Bought it before the show was over.
Liked that much.

Wow, what a release!!!. Great tunes, great arrangements, excellent playing from everyone and a superb sound. This is the Jazz Messengers or the Miles Davis Quintet of today. Not a copy or a cover band - Terence bring something new on the bandstand but he also shows where he is coming from. One of Terence best albums every day of the week.

Magnetic is fully up to Terence Blanchard's high standards -- music-making at its very finest.

Really impressed with the title track, very unique sound and quite pleasing and probably enough to recommend buying this. The rest, for the most part seemed pretty standard fare to me, which by Blanchards standards isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Update 6/24/13 Feel like I must have been smokin' something with my initial review. On further listening its become apparent this is REALLY outstanding music. Highly original sound, kinda space-age. I've updated my review from 4 to 5 stars. Would highly recommend it.

Terence's last cd was magical and would be a tough act for anyone to follow. But not only does he follow,he ascends the art of the jazz combo. I am especially intrigue with his use of electronics. This is different from Miles ,but equally effective . The compositions are varied and well played by this monster young band. Music like this will give you hope.

An album recorded in 2013 by trumpeter Terence Blanchard; the band is basically a quintet with the addition of Lionel Louke on guitar for three tracks.
Contemporary jazz, played well and imaginatively; the compositions are engaging and interesting. A fair bit of electronica is employed – Blanchard's trumpet is altered by a device of some sort on many of the tracks.
The personnel isn't fixed, with Brice Winston and Ravi Coltrane sharing tenor sax duties on different tracks, as do Ron Carter and Joshua Crumbly on bass; Fabian Almazan on piano and Kendrick Scott on drums appear to be the only constant players throughout the album along with the leader.
It's a very good album that makes for repeated listening – do check out the sound samples above for an idea of the content.
The CD has a playing time of just over 68 minutes.

Nice playing from Ravi Coltrane. Terence brilliant as always

Brilliant playing from Terence Blanchard on this album - he's a monster. I bought the album for Ravi Coltrane's playing, who while somewhat in the modern harmonic style or Seamus Blake et al, retains a unique voice. I'm stealing his licks.... sorry Ravi...

Ein Meilenstein?
Reviewed in Germany on August 5, 2013Verified Purchase

A trifle over-rated

I have plenty of Blanchard stuff. The earlier ones are better-played, and better-sounding. Stereophile 'pumped this up' a little too energetically.
